A sure sign that spring is around the corner is when we begin planning for our students’ three major transitions: from preschool into kindergarten, from elementary school to middle school, and from middle to high school. To help families plan, I am happy to share information about events and schedules for each of these milestones.
For our incoming kindergarten students, online registration begins on March 16. If your child will be five years old on or before September 1, 2022 (there are no exceptions to this age requirement) and you are a permanent resident of Amherst or Pelham, you can register your child at https://arps.org/registration/. The district is also hosting an in-person kindergarten informational session on Wednesday, March 23rd at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Crocker Farm Elementary School at 280 West Street. This event will be an opportunity to meet me, the elementary principals and other school-based and district administrators and to learn more about Caminantes, the Spanish dual language program at Fort River. Families who live outside of Amherst or Pelham can attend to learn about school choice.
Sixth graders transitioning to ARMS in the fall will have a chance to learn about their next school from seventh grade counselor Luis Gomba. Mr. Gomba will be visiting each of the elementary schools in late March and early April to share information about the ARMS team structure, class schedules, and exploratory classes. He will also share welcome videos from Principal Diego Sharon, Assistant Principal Doreen Reid, and other ARMS staff members.
The ARHS administrative team will be hosting a live StreamYard presentation to kick off the course registration season for current 8th graders. Parents/guardians and students are encouraged to tune in at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30th using the link https://youtu.be/GYpwpjiCemQ. The presentation will include:
- A description of the block schedule,
- The registration timeline with important deadlines, and
- Departmental recorded videos that explain course offerings in all departments.
If you cannot join the StreamYard presentation on the 30th, the event will be recorded and the departmental videos will be available for viewing asynchronously at your convenience.
Finally, as noted in the email to families regarding the end of the mask mandate as of Monday, teachers shared a brief video message with students regarding the change. The videos can be found at the following links:
