ARHS DESE Report Card for 2020

Dear Families:

Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just

as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report

card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. A link to our

school’s report card is available HERE.

The report card includes multiple measures of a school’s performance – more than just MCAS

scores. It represents a new way of looking at school performance, by providing information on

student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.

Report cards are designed to be useful tools for everyone connected to our school. Families can

use the information to have meaningful conversations with us about what the school is doing

well and where there is room for improvement. Community and education leaders can use the

information to better understand how to support students and our school.

You will notice on our report card that we are within a few percentage points of the state

average in every category, except MassCore Completion. The main reason for that is, as a

district we have different graduation requirements than the state does. Being close to the state

averages is “OK”, but we are striving for “Outstanding”, not just OK. Our teachers are working

hard, our students are working hard, and families are working hard to support their children.

I believe that more effective communication and collaboration between the school, students,

and their families is the first step towards improving student performance in our school. That,

along with additional Tier 2 supports, like Targeted Intervention will improve our Grade 9

Course-Passing rates, Graduation Rates, and our Post-Secondary Enrollment.

We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents as

critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your

continued support.

Finally, if your child attends a school that receives federal Title I funds, you also have the right to

request the following information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers:

  • Whether your child’s teacher is licensed in the grade levels and subject areas they teach,
  • Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under an emergency license or waiver,
  • The college degree and major of your child’s teacher, and
  • Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.

If you have questions about our school’s report card, would like to become involved in school

improvement activities, or would like to request information about the qualifications of your

child’s classroom teacher, please contact arhsoffice@arps.org. Click HERE to see our district’s

report card or to search for other schools’ report cards, visit.

Sincerely,

Talib Sadiq

Interim Principal

Cybersecurity Externship Opportunity

If you are interested in working in this field and can commit to the program  during the month of June, please email me, Deidre Cuffee-Gray (cuffee-grayd@arps.org) with your interest. Here’s the link that will take you to more information about it.https://www.experience.education/externships/

Expectations: Students wanting to attend must be interested in exploring  the field and be able to commit fully. This is an all-or-nothing opportunity, meaning if a student signs up, they must see the commitment through to the end. Ideally slots will preference students underserved in STEM.

Format: The externships take place after school, typically, as well as on one Saturday. The students participate in groups in competition with other groups (often students from around the country or them world), listen to presentations from professionals in the fields, and learn about educational paths, etc. Student reviews so far are very strong.

Class of 2024 collecting for Amherst Survival Center

Help people stay warm this winter! The Class of 2024 has set up a box at Provisions (113 Cowls Road, North Amherst, MA) to collect usable coats, hats, mittens, or any other items to help people stay warm. These items will be dropped off at the Amherst Survival Center, an organization that provides resources for people experiencing homelessness. During the coronavirus pandemic, it is really important that we try to help those who need it, especially during this harsh winter. Please lend a hand to families in our town by donating one or more winter items to our drop-off box. The community needs your help!

Class of 2022

If you have not received a couple of emails from Your Friendly Neighborhood College and Career Advisor, Ms. Cuffee-Gray, it is likely that your Naviance emails are heading straight to your spam folder. In a reality that is incredibly frustrating and inefficient, the @arps.org system designates Naviance as SPAM. You need to go into your email settings and designate emails from Naviance as something you want to receive. This is called “whitelisting” (why is it “whitelisting” and “blacklisting”? hmmmm…), and you’ll begin receiving all my little love notes about preparing for Life After ARHS. Cheers – Ms. DCG

On another note, it seems I misdirected juniors regarding the 54/22 question survey that is required of you to set up a meeting with me. Not a mean trick, just a mistake.

Here’s what you should do:

1. Go to “About Me” in your Naviance account (upper right tab);

2. The dropdown list there has “My Surveys”

3. Choose what is appropriate for you

That should take care of it.

The Grotesque 10 at the Jones Library

The Grotesque 10: Amazing Architectural Sculpture from Ten American Colleges & Universities

Amherst, MA – Intrigued by gargoyles in architecture?  Join us for The Grotesque 10: Amazing Architectural Sculpture from Ten American Colleges and Universities, an event to be hosted by the Jones Library via Zoom on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at 7:00 pm.

Armed with only a camera, a sense of humor and a host of frequent flyer miles, Mathew Duman embarked on a “grotesque safari”, traveling to 10 universities around the country to photograph the unique grotesques and gargoyles roosting on their academic buildings. Mathew found that this type of sculpture makes its home within a style of architecture known as Collegiate Gothic which was popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. He has collected his findings in his book called The Grotesque 10: Amazing Architectural Sculpture from Ten American Colleges and Universities and presents a selection in this illustrated lecture, giving you a taste of the variety of ornament, history and humor these campuses have to offer.

The Grotesque 10 schools we will visit are Yale University, Trinity College (Hartford, CT), Bryn Mawr College, The City College of New York, Duke University, Northwestern University, Princeton University, The University of Chicago, The University of Pennsylvania, and Washington University in St. Louis.

To attend this event, please register by sending an email to programs@joneslibrary.org. You must register with your email address in order to receive the link to participate in this Zoom event. The link will be sent to you by email approximately one day before the event. You will need a device with audio and/or video and an internet connection to join via Zoom.

For more information, please visit https://www.joneslibrary.org/ or contact Janet Ryan at ryanj@joneslibrary.org.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Jones Libraries.

Important Info Regarding Semester 2 Start on Monday

Notes for February 1st:

On February 1 students should log into their S2 Google Classrooms and look for assignments.

There will be a Distance Learning Feedback form in all A-Period classes. The goal of the survey is to hear directly from tudents about what worked and what was challenging for them in Semester 1 related to their distance learning experience. Our goal is to use this survey to make improvements for Semester 2.
