Course Planning Documents for Juniors

Hello Juniors,

Below is a link to an excellent article about planning your senior year courses.  Check it out!  It comes from the blog “Best College Fit” by Peter Van Buskirk.  You might want to subscribe to the blog (free), which will help you in the college application and financial aid processes.

http://www.bestcollegefit.com/blog/archives/1851?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Best%20College%20Fit&utm_content=2.9.17+Blog–College+Planning+Tips+Feb

I have also included a link to the handout from Monday evening’s Naviance presentation for parents.  We ran out of them and could not make more because our copier is broken!  Juniors already have or soon will have each of the three documents in the packet.  The Important Dates has been updated to reflect changes.  I have been handing out the “Junior Homework” document in classroom presentations.  Some presentations have been snowed out and will take place after the February break.

Attention Juniors: 2017-2018 Common Application Essay Prompts

Below are the prompts, one of which you will choose for your college essay.  You should write your essay in the summer or next fall.  For now, read through them and start to think about what you want colleges to know about you.

2017-2018 Common Application Essay Prompts

The Common Application essay prompts have one purpose: to help you introduce yourself to your colleges. (Yes, showcasing your writing ability is part of the equation, but that’s the role of the essay itself, not the prompts.) That’s why the instructions are at least as important as the prompts themselves. Here’s what they say:

“What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response.”

In a sense, the entire essay exercise boils down to that one leading question: What do you want the readers of your application to know about you? This is not a trick question. The ball is fully in your court and always has been. What you write is entirely up to you. So write about yourself–about what you love, where you come from, what you aspire to, how you spend your time, what bugs you, what inspires you, who is important in your life.

In other words: Write an essay on a topic of your choice.

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it.  If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure.  How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma – anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Los resultados completos de las pruebas de agua se pueden encontrar aquí.

Gracias por su apoyo y paciencia mientras trabajábamos en resolver estos problemas.

ARHS Student wins Top Honors in NE Writing Contest

Congratulations to Catalina Yang! Her poem “Trust the Horse” has won 1st place in Massachusetts and been judged the overall New England winner in this year’s Classical Association of New England Writing Contest. The theme this year was “Equo ne credite, Teucri: trickery and treachery in classical antiquity.” Catalina’s poem “Trust the Horse” is a clever reversal of the famous story of the Greek capture of Troy. Catalina will read her poem in March at the annual CANE banquet. This is the second year in a row that an ARHS student has won top honors in Massachusetts. Last year Sophia Fang won 1st place in Massachusetts for her poem “Non Sum Qualis Eram.”

Overdue Amnesty at Jones Library End Monday

The Jones Library and branches will be offering an amnesty period from through January 31, 2017 for library patrons who return overdue library materials. Library patrons are encouraged to bring a non-perishable, non-expired food donation for the Amherst Survival Center when they return overdue library materials during this time.
“This is a great opportunity for patrons with long-overdue library materials to get those items back to the library without having to pay the fines that are accumulating,” says Amy Anaya, Head of Borrower Services at the Jones Library. It’s important to note that the amnesty applies only to items that are being returned during this time. It will not be possible to forgive existing overdue fines on items that have already been returned, or for billed or lost items.
The food collected will support the work of the Amherst Survival Center, a local service agency that assists many in our community in meeting their basic needs.
For further information about returning overdue items, please contact Amy Anaya at 413/259-3132.

On the Same Page – Amherst Program Series

same-pageThe Jones Library is holding its fifth On the Same Page community reading program, this year featuring the book The Sixth Extinction:  An Unnatural History by bestselling author Elizabeth Kolbert.  The book explores the five mass extinctions that have occurred over the past half-billion years, when the diversity of life on earth has been severely reduced.  Kolbert explains how humans have altered life on the planet and how these actions may become our legacy.

This year, the Jones Library is pleased to partner with the Hitchcock Center for the Environment as we bring programs and discussions to the Amherst community during this community-wide read.  The following series of programs will be held during January and February at the Jones Library and at the Hitchcock Center, and are based on topics and themes from the book.  The author event will be held at the Amherst Regional Middle School.  For complete program descriptions, visit the program’s webpage at http://www.joneslibrary.org/onthesamepage.

Meeting Time with Superintendent Search Consultant

The Amherst, Pelham and Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools are in the process of seeking a permanent Superintendent of Schools to serve our communities.  To support this process, the districts have contracted with Ray and Associates, Inc. to conduct the search.  A consultant for Ray and Associates, Dr. Michael Rush, met with the School Committee this past Tuesday to recommend a timeline and process for selecting the new Superintendent and the Committee voted to accept the timeline.

Dr. Rush will return to our district on Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24 in order to conduct focus group sessions. These group sessions will represent a broad range of constituencies within the school district and the larger community and are intended to gather more specific information about the strengths and challenges within our community.

Parents and guardians are invited to meet with Dr. Rush on Monday, January 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library.  The meeting with Dr. Rush will last one hour.  Please be sure to attend and offer your thoughts about what qualities, skills, and experience the School Committees should consider as they seek a permanent Superintendent of Schools.

UPDATE: ARHS Gym Renovation Project

We are excited to provide an update on the ARHS gymnasium renovation project.  The architectural firm Kuhn Riddle will have the design work for the project done by the end of January with construction anticipated to begin in March.  The construction phase of the project will be completed by August 15th in time for all of our Fall athletic programs and the 2017-18 school year.  The scope of the project will include the following:

  1. Removal and replacement of the existing gym floor
  2. Removal of the wooden bleachers to be replaced with new ADA compliant composite bleachers
  3. Painting the ceiling and walls white with Hurricane logos (location TBD)
  4. Removal of the non-functioning mechanical doors to be replaced with drop down netting
  5. Reconfigure the volleyball court to allow for two practice nets

We appreciate everyones patience with this project as it has put a strain on our physical education students and teachers as well as our athletic teams this year.  In the end we will have a fully renovated gymnasium that has not seen significant updates since its construction in 1959.  This is an exciting chapter in ARHS Athletics and we can’t wait to see our student athletes utilizing this space next year!

Letter to ARHS Parents/Guardians on Ballot Question # 4

In the November election, Massachusetts voters approved ballot question #4: the  ‘Legalization, Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana.’

As a result, school districts all over the state are working to clarify the law for their communities.

While the state’s Executive Office of Public Safety and Security has described the new law as ‘a complex web of different rules…’, my goal here is to sidestep most of the fine print and focus only on the implications of the law for the high school and its students.

In December, I met with a representative of the Amherst Police Department to take advice on how to best summarize the law. They have reviewed and approved the summary below.

Here are the core provisions:

  1. It is illegal for anyone to possess or consume marijuana on the grounds of or within a public or private school where children attend classes in preschool programs, kindergarten programs or secondary schools.
  2. It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess marijuana or attempt to procure unless they hold a valid medical marijuana card.

The new law does not change the consequences for marijuana in school. Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 37 H still applies.

Beyond the law, there is our larger interest in the healthy development of our students. Marijuana use, in my judgment and those of experts in the field, doesn’t much contribute to this.

As always, our guidance department is available to talk with parents/guardians and families if there are concerns.

Thank you.

Mark Jackson
Principal

Senior News

Following is news for seniors from Myra Ross, college counselor:

  1.  Remember:  The application deadline for UMass Amherst is Sunday, Jan. 15.  If you plan to apply to UMass, and most of you should, you need to put it in your Common Application and in Naviance.  Tonight would be a good time to do it!
  1.  The UMass Amherst deadline for ALL supporting documents, including all school documents and official test scores (ARHS does not send scores; they must be sent by the testing company) is FEB. 1.  BE sure that your account is complete.  Send scores officially today if you neglected to do it.  It can take 3 weeks for scores to get there at this time of year, so take care of this immediately.
  1.  Almost all other four-year colleges will have deadlines before Feb. 1.  If you have been procrastinating, you are now in the home stretch and need to finalize your list, in Naviance, and in the Common Application, if applicable.  See me, your counselor or a Guidance secretary, (in 101 or 309) if you need help getting the logistics done.
  1. About a week after you submit an application, you should begin to check the status of your applications.  If you received login codes from colleges, use them every day until you know that colleges have all of your materials.  If you provided an e-mail address to colleges, check it every day until you know that your applications are complete.  After about two weeks, if your application still seems to be incomplete, call the college to check.  Sometimes, they have materials that the computer has missed.  If materials are indeed missing, come to guidance and we will fax the missing materials for you.  Colleges lose materials all the time, so don’t worry.  Just check and then see us if you need help.  Do not be the student who did not get into a college because s/he did not know that something was missing.  Believe me, it happens!
  1. Jan. 19 is FAFSA Day at ARHS.  Come at 7 pm and leave with much of the form complete.  Register at fafsaday.org.  The website has a list of documents to bring with you.  If you will need help completing the FAFSA, please sign up this weekend.
  1. Before you can submit a FAFSA, both you and your parent(s) must create an FSAID.  This replaces the PIN, used in previous years.  Even if your parents have a PIN, they will need to get an FSAID.  It is an electronic signature and gives you access to the Federal Student Aid online system.  Go to fsaid.ed.gov to create yours.  Have your parent do it too.  It may take a few minutes, so don’t expect to do it here on FAFSA day, Jan. 19.
  1. Be sure to file your FAFSA and any other required financial aid forms, on time!  This means they must be completed before your first financial aid deadline.  If you don’t know those deadlines, you have another task for this weekend!
  1. Applying to HCC or GCC?  An HCC Admissions representative will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 7, to answer your questions and admit you.  The GCC representative will be here on Wednesday, Feb. 8.  Sign-up sheets are available in Guidance.  You must hand in your lime green release form, put the college into “Colleges I’m Applying To” in Naviance, and most importantly, complete the HCC or GCC application.  Find them at hcc.edu or gcc.mass.edu.
  1. May 1 is the official national “Candidate Reply Date” agreed to by colleges that belong to NACAC, the National Association for College Admission Counseling.  Almost all colleges and most high schools belong.  Colleges have agreed not to require non-refundable deposits prior to May 1.  If a college asks you for a deposit before May 1 to reserve housing for example, it must be refundable until May 1.  If you are unable to make a refundable deposit, contact the Admissions Office and let them know that you are unable to make the deposit and that you would like your acceptance to remain active until May 1.  Please let me know immediately if a college seems not to know your rights.
  1. Check your SAT and ACT accounts to see that all scores were indeed sent where you need them to go.
  1. The ARHS scholarship brochure and application will be e-mailed to you just before February break.  Applications for scholarships determined by the ARHS staff or scholarship committee are due on Apr. 3.  The deadline is not flexible.  TAKE THE TIME TO APPLY FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS!!
  1. The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts (communityfoundation.org) scholarship application is now open.  The deadline is Mar. 31.  They offer many scholarships and require transcripts and the SAR (Student Aid Report) from the FAFSA.  Do not wait until the last minute to apply to the Community Foundation.  .
  1. Keep checking Naviance for scholarships to apply for.  Remember that if you need a transcript, you must request one in Naviance.  It is not sufficient to simply list a scholarship in your account.
  1. If you are informed by a financial aid office that you have been selected for verification of your FAFSA, follow the instructions provided to you ASAP.  Colleges will differ in what they want you to do.  You MUST comply with a verification request.
