INFO FOR SENIORS: Mid-year report timeline, IEPs, and Scholarships

This message was sent out to the HS seniors:

Dear Seniors-
1. As you know, this is the last week of Semester 1/Quarter 2. This means that soon you will have finalized grades and we will send those finalized grades to the colleges to which you have applied. Here is our timeline:
– S1/Q2 ends on Jan. 20th
– Powerschool closes on Jan. 24th and reopens on Jan. 31st
– Be sure to look at your grades and check to see if there are any errors, and if so, contact your teacher(s) ASAP!
– Feb. 3rd- All finalized grades are due
– Feb. 7th- Grades are stored in the system
– Feb. 8th-9th- Mid-year reports are reviewed and downloaded
– Feb. 9th-14th- Midyear reports are sent to colleges

Please note that occasionally technical issues or staff absences can result in a slightly extended review period. This is a general timeline, not exact dates.

If a college is sending you scary emails about missing transcripts, it is likely because they are awaiting your midyear report. We cannot send ANY midyear reports for any reason for any student before February 8th because the report will not be available. Some colleges will tell you they have deadlines, and we may not meet those deadlines. If you hear from a college that they won’t accept anything after a deadline, please forward the email to Miss Garrity and she will call the admissions office.

2. If you are a student on an IEP and you are planning on utilizing disability services at the college level, you may need to request copies of your IEP and diagnostic testing from the high school. For confidentiality reasons, we do not send these sort of sensitive documents to colleges without specific consent. If you are looking to provide your college with your IEP, 504 plan, or testing, please stop by Guidance or Room 309 for a copy of the release form!

3. Finally, the Scholarship Book is in the works and will be released to seniors the week before February break! The book will contain over 50 scholarships available to ARHS students! If you’re already gearing up to apply and get your FREE MONEY, check out the scholarships that are already listed in the Class of ‘23 Google classroom! Not in the Google Classroom yet? Message from Mr. Talib Sadiq to ARHS families (1/6/23)

“Hello Family & Friends of ARHS,

I hope the New Year is off to a good start for all of you. This short week was a nice
way to transition back to the school routine. We started the week by reviewing
several of our rules and expectations with students during A period, because I
believe we all need reminders from time to time. Students were reminded to make
sure their phones are away during class, that they will be marked absent if they’re
out of class for more than 20 minutes, that they need to sign out if they leave the
building for any reason without a teacher, and about expectations regarding the
bathrooms.”

AEF’s Winter Stars In Our Schools closes on December 31st!

Is there a teacher or staff member that has made a difference in your child’s life this year?

Make a donation to December’s Stars In Our Schools Campaign in their honor and Amherst Education Foundation will send a note of gratitude on your behalf, thanking them for all their hard work and dedication. We grant an average of $30,000 annually to teachers and administrators in our schools and all the money raised this month will help us fund the next round of initiatives and programs. This past year we provided funding for dash robots for a technology lab at Crocker Farm, professional development for teachers working on implementing Project-Based Learning at Wildwood, expansion through youth leadership of the Restorative Justice Leadership Program at the High School, and a Theater for All project designed to bring theater opportunities through after school programs across several schools in the district. So far this month we have honored 60 teachers/staff and raised $1,510. Last December we honored over 200 teachers and staff and raised over $5,000; please help us do the same this year.

Visit amhersteducationfoundation.org/stars and make your gift today!

GRIT: A combination of passion and perseverance for a singularly important goal is the hallmark of high achievers in every domain.

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn’t the only thing separating successful students from those who struggled.

Duckworth found that the most successful freshmen at Penn were students with the highest grit scores. Grit was more important than being at the top of their high school class (as measured by GPA and test scores). She found the same thing with contestants at the National Spelling Bee. Those with the most grit beat those with higher verbal IQ scores. And her test was a great predictor of success at West Point. The cadets with the highest grit score were most likely to finish Beast Barracks, the grueling basic-training course.

HERE, she explains her theory of “grit” as a predictor of success.

Civil Air Patrol: A nonprofit organization that plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM education resources

Every now and then we grant requests for postings from non-profits that may benefit ARPS and the larger community.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressionally chartered, federally supported non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The CAP cadet program offers education in aerospace, leadership, character, and physical fitness. For many students, the CAP offers life-long friendships, opportunities to serve the community and pathways to scholarships for higher education and flight academies.
