ARHS Library Gets Makeover

IMG_20170824_102929The Amherst-Pelham Regional High School’s library staff  received word that they had been included in a University of Kansas librarian’s will and would be receiving more than $65,000.  The school used that money to pay for 115 new chairs, lounge furniture, arm chairs, a long counter for students working on their laptops, cafe stools for that counter and see-through “loft” walls to divide off a quiet pleasure-reading section in the library.

Celebrating Jane Austen at the Jones Library

Jane Austen Film Festival & Fashion in Fiction

Amherst, MA – As 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen, one of the world’s most beloved authors, the Jones Library celebrates her contributions to literature and the arts with special programming during the month of September.

The Jane Austen Film Festival will take place on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm and Saturday afternoons at 2:30 pm, beginning on Saturday, September 2 and running through Tuesday, September 19th. These free screenings provide a visual interpretation of most of Jane Austen’s published works, and have been enjoyed by viewers over the course of decades.

The Film Festival culminates with a special final event as Kandie Carle presents “Fashion in Fiction” on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 2 pm in the Woodbury Room. This delightful show-and-tell on the fashion of Regency England as reflected in Jane Austen’s fiction will include dressing “Elizabeth Bennet” and “Mr. Darcy” as well as readings from Miss Austen’s letters and novel.

For the complete program of film titles, pick up a flyer on your next visit to the library or visit the library’s website at http://www.joneslibrary.org/JaneAusten for more details on the program series. All the films are rated PG or not rated.

These events are generously funded by the Friends of the Jones Libraries.

Free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.

Tidbits for Juniors (Rising Seniors)

  1.   If you are a high achieving first generation college applicant, a student of color or a low income student, who takes primarily honors and AP classes, you might want to look at:

http://blog.collegegreenlight.com/blog/college-fly-diversity-programs-2016-2017/#sthash.46zb9DrD.dpbs

It is a list of special fly-in programs offered by many liberal arts colleges and some universities.  The programs are free.  Applications are required for these programs, which are designed to help you learn about colleges and help them learn about you!  It’s a great way to figure out what you like.

If you are a very high achieving student with almost all honors and AP classes and with a family income under $60,000, you might want to apply to colleges through the highly competitive Questbridge program, which offers full scholarships to many of the country’s most selective colleges.  They have a late September deadline. Go to questbridge.org for complete information.  If you are seriously thinking about Questbridge, tell or e-mail me, your recommending teachers, and your counselor ASAP.

Remember, the summer is the best time to write application essays.  You will not be a happy camper if you leave this chore for the fall.  Besides, many of you will need to write additional essays in the fall.  The Common Application and Coalition Application essay prompts are in the link below.

If you plan to take the September 9 ACT or the August 26 or October 7 SAT, you might want to register soon, before you forget about school for a while.  The registration deadlines without a late fee are August 4 for the ACT and July 28 for the August and September 8 for the October SAT.  You can register late for the ACT until August 18 and late for the August SAT before August 8.  If you qualify for a fee waiver, see Mrs. Cappelli before June 28.  Unused fee waivers will expire in August!

Remember that demonstrated interest is increasingly important to colleges for admissions purposes.  Visit, visit, visit!  Interview!  Get the name of your admissions counselor at colleges you will apply to and stay in touch.

I expect that most of you have secured your teacher recommendations.  Don’t forget the last step – naming those teachers in Naviance.  Go to colleges/letters of recommendation/ and select your teachers from the dropdown list.  Unless you will be applying to colleges for which you might want to send different recommendations, you should select “for all colleges” for each teacher you select.  You can amend this later if necessary.  You might want to put a quick thank you to your teachers in the Notes section.  Remember – if you decide to apply to a college early (November deadline), you need to let your teacher know ASAP so the recommendation will be ready on time.

In the next few months you may begin to receive mailings or e-mails from honor societies, Who’s Who, National Society of High School Scholars and various other organizations who say they can get you scholarships and other advantages.  Allegedly there is currently one going around from Vector.  Some of these are scams outright and some are just benign businesses that will not hurt you except in the wallet.  By and large, ignore them, unless you want to put your name in their publications and purchase them.  Colleges are not impressed by membership or participation.

The 2017-18 Common Application (commonapp.org) will go live on August 1.  If you are inclined to begin in July, the current form is supposed to convert to the new one on August 1, if you choose the correct application year when beginning the application.  They say it will work!  There will be no Common App access between July 24 and August 1.

The Coalition Application (www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/), which is an alternative application for about 100 mostly elite institutions, will be available to you in July.  UMASS will not be accepting that application, so if you plan to apply to UMASS you will need to use the Common Application.  It’s your call as to whether you want to do the other one as well.  Only three institutions, the Universities of Maryland, Florida, and Washington (state) will use this application exclusively.  All other members will use the Common Application as well as the Coalition Application.  As members of the Common Application, they are required to treat all applications equally in the Admissions process.

Research shows that at least 20 hours of preparation for standardized college admission tests can improve your scores significantly.  Most of you will have 20 hours available for this purpose in the summer.  In addition to the free test prep available through Khan Academy for the SAT and through the Method Test Prep link on your Naviance home page, Method Test Prep offers a few additional paid options, some of which are extremely affordable.  See their links on the next page.

Have a relaxing and productive summer.

Raising Kids Who Embrace Race

embraceraceREGISTER HERE to join this FREE, online, community conversation on TUESDAY,  June 27 at 5:30 pm PT/ 8:30 pm ET.

Why We Gather. EmbraceRace is about building a strong and nourishing community of practice for parents, guardians, teachers and other caregivers who want to help raise a generation of children who are thoughtful, informed, and brave about race. In this session we — Andrew (Grant-Thomas) and Melissa (Giraud) — will talk about the Big Picture of race in the United States that led us to launch the community. We’ll highlight the goals derived from that Big Picture and describe some of the work, both current and upcoming, we hope will help us all move toward those goals. We see EmbraceRace both as a provider of information and support in the race-and-raising-kids space and as part of a larger movement for racial and social justice. We think there’s a lot at stake in whether, how, and how well we collectively do this work. Let’s talk about it!

We invite anyone raising and mentoring kids to join us for this conversation. Register now to attend online on June 27th at 8:30 pm ET.Registering also ensures that you will receive the after-event recording and resources whether you attend live or not.

Agenda

8:30 to 9:10 pm ET: Andrew Grant-Thomas and Melissa Giraud share the racial “big picture” that motivated them to form EmbraceRace and outline the shape that’s taken so far.
9:10 to 9:30 pm ET: Their presentation will be followed by time for feedback and questions; please come to participate.

Melissa Giraud and Andrew Grant-Thomas are life partners, partners in EmbraceRace, and co-parents to two girls, ages 6 and 9.

Melissa is the first-generation American, biracial (black/white) daughter of a French Canadian mother and Dominican father, (the island of Dominica, not the Dominican Republic). She’s often seen as white but just as often gets the “what are you?” question or look. Professionally, Melissa has been most interested in supporting learning and life outcomes for underserved students and families, especially immigrant girls and girls of color. Those driving concerns have shaped her work as an educator, NPR producer, education technology strategist, foundation consultant, and now as a co-founder of EmbraceRace.

Andrew is a long-time racial justice guy, a black man of Jamaican origins in the United States, born on the 4th of July. He’s grateful to have been able to do work meaningful to him alongside people whose examples inspire him. He understands that, in myriad and sometimes unwitting ways, the most fortunate people in the US have built their good fortune largely on the backs of the least fortunate, just as the United States has built its cultural, economic and military preeminence largely on the backs of people outside our borders. He believes race has played a prominent role in both cases.

ARHS Class Council Elections in the Fall

Principal Mark Jackson has decided to postpone the Class Council elections until the fall.  The reason is as follows: “Right now, we are up against the end of the school year. Exams and moving on to summer are the current priorities. In my judgment, the elections are too important to occur at a time when everyone is distracted and energy is running low. It’s hard for me to imagine that candidates can focus on preparing and running their campaigns and, just as importantly, that the student body, in the interest of making an informed choice, can attend to the candidates and their various platforms.

September is the time of the school year when everyone is refreshed and focused. Here, both candidates and voters can devote the right amount of time and attention to making the elections a meaningful exercise in school government.

Beyond this year, I would like to make September elections the norm.

At the beginning of the next school year, Ms. Haygood will inform the school community of the details and deadlines for the elections.”

PGO Grant Funds ARHS Performing Arts

FullSizeRenderThis year the PGO Grant Funded the ARHS Performing Arts.  They had a New Idea Grant awarded to the Theater Company to host the visit of playwright Anne Washburn, who visited the school in May, right on the heels of us producing her play Mr. Burns: a Post-Electric Play.
Anne’s visit combined a student workshop on playwriting with a public talk later that evening on playwriting and contemporary theater.  In addition, Anne had an hour-long Skype meeting in the weeks prior to her visit with the student director of Mr. Burns – Nathan Baron-Silvern ’17.
All facets of the event went terrifically – students got meaningful time with a nationally-recognized and award-winning playwright (Mr. Burns was one of the country’s top 10 most-produced plays a couple of years ago, and her star continues to rise), the public got to come into the school to her a talk with her, and the school has been able to extend its exciting run of hosting high-caliber playwrights in these past 3 years, with the promise of more visits to come.
To that final point, Anne reported a terrific experience while here and – unprompted – made an offer to help us reach out to her professional peers should we wish to host further invitations in the future.  The PGO grant has helped facilitate all of this work.
Thanks again for supporting us!  It’s thrilling to have our students exposed to some of the country’s top talent in the playwriting world and we hope we’ve sown the seeds for future visits.
And – here’s a picture of Anne, the student director of Burns, Nathan, and John Bechtold, Department Chair.

PGO Grant Funds ARHS Outdoor Program

CIMG7129The ARHS OUTDOOR PROGRAM wishes to thank the PGO for supporting them this year with funds that were used to purchase new tents.

Since approximately 1970, the ARHS Outdoor Program has offered opportunities for students in our district to get outdoors. They lead day hikes, overnight trips, leadership programs, and the chance to push boundaries in the Survival Living program. For almost that long, participants have carried old leaky tents into the field!

The new tents were put to use right away, as we experience heavy rain on the first night of Survival living this year. The students who used these tents reported that they were totally dry the next morning!

The PGO is able to fund this program through the participation of parents/guardians in the Stop & Shop A+ Rewards Program.

The funds raised through this program make it possible to support many initiatives and have made a difference to teachers and students.

If you have not done so, please take a moment to register your Stop & Shop cards for the A+ Rewards Program and help support exciting projects proposed by our students and teachers.

Purchases made at all Stop & Shop stores will benefit ARHS, including purchases at stores in Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island!

Graduation Information

class-of-2017Graduation rehearsal will be held at 8 a.m. on June 9 th at the Mullins Center. All graduating seniors must attend this rehearsal, which will last approximately two hours. Please enter the Mullins Center via the ground level doors on the west side of the building (facing the town of Hadley) for rehearsal. Lot 67 is available for rehearsal parking during. Note – University parking regulations are in effect if you park in another lot. Students have been issued tickets in the past.

Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. for the ceremony. Handicapped parking is provided in the metered lot on the N/E corner of the Mullins Center. The Mullins Center staff reports that no balloons of any kind will be allowed in the building. This includes mylar and helium ones as they interfere with lighting and equipment. In order to preserve the dignity and ceremony of the occasion, we ask that parents and guests remain in the seating area during the ceremony, and not climb down onto the floor of the stadium. After the ceremony, the barriers will be removed so families can reunite. Since the Mullins Center staff must break down the facility set-up that evening, we ask that you not loiter on the floor.

Amherst Regional High School is pleased to announce that this year’s Graduation Exercises from the Mullins Center will be live-streamed for those who may be unable to attend in person.

Project Graduation- We need Volunteers!

Friday, June 9, 2017 (tonight!) represents the 36th year of a totally fun Amherst High tradition: Project Graduation (also known as Senior Party).  Every year, on the evening after graduation, parents of both seniors and juniors have organized a great party to celebrate ARHS graduating seniors and give them a final chance to hang out and have fun. This is not a school-sponsored event! It happens every year with a lot of help from parents, business donors, and the entire community.

Project Graduation relies on hundreds of volunteers organized into committees. Parents/ guardians of Juniors are encouraged to pay it forward.  There are a few shifts left- we need you help!

To volunteer, please click HERE and find a shift (or two) that work for you, enter your info, and click the confirmation link when it comes to your email inbox. Committee chairs will follow up with you. Check back later for volunteer spots.

PGO Grant Funds ARHS Special Education Dept.

The PGO awarded $500 grants last year to the ARHS AIMS Program.  The grant money was used to fund interview workshops with private consultant Mark Efinger.

Mark’s two workshops were a wonderful supplement to the communication and transition skills we target within the program.  During his workshops, Mark broke down the structure of college and work interviews, placing special focus on critical first impressions. He showed students how they could  address that common open-ended question – “Tell me a little about yourself”- by crafting individual success stories with real examples from their lives to show how they possess the positive qualities interviewers want. During the workshops, students had a chance to craft and present their stories, get personalized feedback from Mark, and role play interviews with each other.

Coast to Coast for Charlie- a Fundraiser

Charlie Read was a ARHS student who passed away last year due to unexpected death from Epilepsy.  He loved sports — especially baseball, hockey and bicycling.  He played junior varsity baseball and hockey, and he and his friends got a bicycling club started at ARHS.

On June 18th Clif and Arleen Read will dip the rear wheels of our bicycles into the waters of the Pacific Ocean in Anacortes WA, and begin our 9 week, 3,712 mile ride east to Boston where we will dip our front wheels into the Atlantic (hopefully) on August 12th. We will be making this amazing journey with an incredible group of 6 core riders and a larger group of friends and family who will join us for different segments of the trip.

Many of you know that we lost our dear son Charlie last August 15th at age 16 to Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy (SUDEP). Our C2C4Charlie ride this summer will be held in Charlie’s memory, and as a fundraising event to support the work of the SUDEP Institute of the Epilepsy Foundation. The institute funds research into SUDEP causes and prevention, educates families and health care providers about its risks, and supports the many devastated families of SUDEP victims. Each year we lose 3,000 people to SUDEP, primarily teens and young adults, without any clear understanding of its cause.

While our riding group will be small, we are hoping our broader community will help support us through the summer by following our blog and Facebook posts, and for those interested, by contributing to our fundraising effort for the SUDEP Institute.

Sign Up for ARHS Staff Appreciation Lunch

On Thursday, June 22nd ARHS parents and guardians will thank the entire staff with a scrumptious lunch. Here are several ways you can help:
  1. Bring a dessert or side/salad for 8-10 people
  2. Volunteer to help set up, serve, and clean up
  3. Make a monetary donation to help cover the cost of the deli spread, drinks and all the extras

Please attach a list of ingredients and your (or student’s) name to your dish; staff often ask what’s in, or who made, particular dishes. Consider bringing something gluten-free or vegan or nut-free. You can drop off your dish that morning between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. Bring food donations in disposable containers with serving utensils (if needed) or label anything you want back.  Items may be claimed in the office until Tuesday, June 27th.  Any questions? Contact Laura: l.wear@comcast.net
