Amherst ABC Gospel Choir Concert Honors ARHS Dean of Students Mary Custard

This year, the annual Gospel Choir Concert to benefit Amherst A Better Chance (ABC) is on Tuesday, March 31st, at Grace Episcopal Church, Amherst. The concert starts at 7:30 PM and features the Amherst Area Gospel Choir, the Amherst Regional High School Hurricane Singers, and the Hampshire Young People’s Chorus. Concert-goers are also invited to a welcome reception with light refreshments from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the room adjacent to the Sanctuary at Grace Church. The reception will include the opportunity to meet the Amherst A Better Chance Scholars and Resident Directors and to congratulate this year’s ABC Local Hero Award recipient Mary Custard.

Amherst Regional High School Dean of Students Mary Custard is so deserving of this year’s Local Hero Award. Ms Custard is a long-time beloved and well-respected member of the ARHS community. A tireless advocate for all students, Mary’s long-time association with Amherst A Better Chance demonstrates just how deep and authentic her commitment is both to issues of social justice and to the young people who are so deserving of our support. Mary is the unofficial cheerleader for Amherst ABC. She attends all events and creates photo records of each. Her posts on social media promote the ABC story on a regular basis. When Mary Custard is needed, at any time and in any way, she is a dependable and devoted presence at the ABC House.

A Donation of $20 (or more!) from each concert-goer will be gratefully accepted, but all who wish to celebrate the ABC Program through gospel music are most welcome. Donations can be made on-line at http://www.amherstabetterchance.org or at the concert on March 31st.

Amherst-Shield-Screen-500px-ColorT

The Town Council and School Committee will hold joint meetings to fill a School Committee vacancy on April 14 at 6:00 pm and April 16 at 6:00 pm in the Town Room, Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Avenue.

Interviews will be conducted on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, 6:00 pm, at a special joint meeting of the Amherst Town Council and the School Committee. If necessary, the remaining interviews will be conducted on Thursday, April 16, 2020, 6:00 pm at a special joint meeting of the Amherst Town Council and the School Committee.  The candidate will be selected at a special joint meeting of the Town Council and the School Committee at a meeting on April 16, 2020.  Candidate Statement of Interest due by Tuesday, March 31, 4:00 PM.

Interviews to fill the vacancy on the Amherst School Committee will be conducted on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, 6:00 pm, at a special joint meeting of the Amherst Town Council and the remaining members of the Amherst School Committee. Both special joint meeting will take place at 6:00 pm in the second floor Town Room, Amherst Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Avenue. Amherst Media will broadcast the meeting live on channel 17. Public comment will not be part of this special meeting.

Amherst Home Rule Charter, Section 4.1.c, and MGL Chapter 41 Section 11 govern vacancies in elected Town-wide office other than the Town Council. Law requires a roll call vote of both bodies, and the winning candidate must receive a majority of votes of the remaining filled seats on both boards. Under the law, absences and abstentions do not affect that requirement, so at least nine positive votes must be made for the selected individual, regardless of how many members of the Town Council and Amherst School Committee are present.

The selected individual shall be sworn in by the Town Clerk at Amherst Town Hall during business hours as soon as possible and will serve until newly elected members of the Amherst School Committee are sworn in on Monday, January 3, 2022. If the selected individual also wishes to be on the November 2, 2021 ballot for a two-year term, s/he must follow the same process as any other candidate for Town-wide office.  Per the Amherst Home Rule Charter, the individual will not be listed on the ballot as “a candidate for re-election”.

The new Amherst School Committee member also serves on the Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee. Check the schools’ website http://arps.org/district/other-helpful-links/school-committee for already scheduled meetings of the Amherst School Committee and Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee. Depending on schedules and interest, the new Amherst School Committee member may also serve as a member on either the Town of Amherst Joint Capital Planning Committee (JCPC) and/or the Town of Amherst Budget Coordinating Group (BCG).

Candidate Statements of Interest are due by 4:00 pm EST, March 31, 2020. This deadline cannot be extended.  A Statement of Interest must be submitted in order to be considered at the meeting of April 14, 2020 or, if necessary, April 16, 2020. Candidates must be physically present at the meeting in the Town Room in order to be considered.

Statements of Interest shall not exceed one single side 8.5 x 11 page (12-point font) and shall include candidate contact information, including name, address of voter registration, email, and at least one telephone number, reasons the candidate wishes to serve on the Amherst School Committee, and the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Resumes and attachments will not be accepted. A description of the Amherst School Committee responsibilities and expectations is also available on the Town Website. This should inform candidates Statements of Interest.

Statements of Interest will be available to the public on the Town web site and as part of the Town Council and School Committee meeting packet materials for the special April 14, 2020 and April 16, 2020 meetings.

On the Wednesday prior to the meeting, the Town Council President will send an email providing all candidates, all members of the Amherst School Committee, and all Town Council members with the process adopted by the Town Council so all are aware of the how the vacancy will be filled. The email will also include the candidates’ Statements of Interest; a description of the Amherst School Committee’s responsibilities and expectations; and questions for the candidate.  This material will also be available in the Town Council’s meeting packet materials for the April 14, 2020 and the April 16, 2020 meetings.

Email (preferred) or hard copy Statements of Interest must be made to Clerk of the Town Council Athena O’Keeffe at Amherst Town Hall, 4 Boltwood Ave, Amherst MA 01002. COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Information

Wednesday, February 26, 2020

Dear ARPS Community:

The Coronavirus, known as COVID-19, has been much in the news for the past few weeks, and we want to share information about how ARPS is responding. We want to assure our community that there have not been any cases, or suspected cases, of COVID-19 in the Amherst, Pelham or Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools. In fact, as of this writing, Massachusetts has only one confirmed case of COVID-19 in the entire state, in the Boston area, and the risk to our residents remains low according to the Massachusetts Department of Health. They note, “While person-to-person spread among close contacts has been detected with this virus, at this time this virus is NOT currently spreading in the community in the United States.” In the US, there are only 53 cases confirmed. It is important to note that residents are much more likely to become sick with a cold or the flu than to be exposed to COVID-19.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has shared guidance for school administrators and school health personnel regarding the COVID-19 which we are following. We revised our cleaning checklists last year to promote safety and health and are reviewing the recently-released DPH documents to further refine them based on their guidance. As usual, our custodial staff did a deep cleaning of all of the buildings over the February break while staff and students were away.  In addition, please know we are in frequent communication with the Amherst Public Health Department, which is working directly with MDPH and following recommendations from both MDPH and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), including taking part in weekly conference calls about the virus.

For questions regarding the schools’/Districts’ protocols for dealing with viruses such as COVID-19, you may contact Jill Conselino, MSN, RN, and ARPS Nurse Manager, at 362-1806 or conselinoj@arps.org.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Morris, Superintendent

Jill Conselino, MSN, RN, ARPS Nurse Manager

Fact Sheet to assist you in learning more about COVID-19: https://www.mass.gov/guides/information-on-the-outbreak-of-2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19#-printable-fact-sheets-.

From AmherstMA.gov

The Amherst Health Department continues to monitor the global outbreak of COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus. We are in close communication with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), our local institutions of higher education and the Amherst Regional Public Schools (ARPS).

First, we’re on it!

The Town has systems in place to address just this type of situation.  We have experienced experts who are actively monitoring and managing the situation in the Town.

The Amherst Public Health Department is the local end of a chain that starts with the Federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and goes through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Hampshire Public Health Preparedness Coalition (HPHPC). The Town is the local point of contact and source for local information for residents and businesses of Amherst.

At every level, emergency response plans – plans that have been set-up, reviewed, and updated regularly for years – and are being reviewed for this particular situation.

We are in continuous contact with the CDC and DPH, with our local institutions of higher education, with our local hospital and we are working very closely with the Amherst Regional Public Schools (ARPS).

What do we know now?

Planning for and preventing the spread of communicable disease is an ongoing process at all levels of government. We in Amherst are part of a robust system of planning, communication and response to disease outbreaks. Amherst healthcare providers, our local hospitals, and Emergency Medical Systems are in communication with DPH regarding the virus and potential cases.

As of March 4, 2020, the risk of infection in our area is low and there is no “community-level spread” of the virus. There is one confirmed case in Massachusetts and one “presumptive positive” case identified, which is still pending confirmation by the CDC. We can’t predict the spread of the virus and it’s possible that we’ll see cases of COVID-19 in our community.

The good news is we are prepared and have time to get ready. Click here to visit our COVID-19/Coronavirus web page.

Spring Awakening To Be Staged At ARHS

springawakeningARHS is proud to present Spring Awakening, March 12-14!  The brilliant Tony Award-winning Best Musical of 2007 comes to the ARHS stage, featuring the work of over 120 of our incredible students.  Based on the 1891 play of the same name, Spring Awakening is a cautionary tale about what happens when adults fail to support and educate teenagers in their emerging adulthood.  Featuring a gorgeous production design and thrilling alt-rock score – all run by our students – it will be an electric, memorable show.

Due to its mature themes, which include teen sex, mental health, and abuse, the show is recommended for audiences aged 14 years and up.  Students that are 12-13 years old are strongly advised to attend with a parent/guardian.  We do not recommend the show for audiences under 12 years old.  We strongly encourage you to review this content advisory for details on the show’s content and the ARHS staging of this work.
While an atypical choice for our winter musical, the ARHS cast and crew are united around their efforts on this enthralling show – and the space for dialogue around issues of teen health and adult support that it creates.  We promise a thrilling, enjoyable, and poignant production for our audiences that we can’t wait to share.
Tickets can be ordered online at arhsspringawakening.bpt.me.  The production runs March 12-14 at 7:30, with a 2:00 matinee on March 14.

Attn Juniors- Intro to Naviance

ARHS juniors have access to a college and career research program called Naviance Student.  Naviance will allow students to electronically request and track their college transcripts and recommendations next fall.  Currently , they have access to college and career inventories and searches, and link to additional resources. Through your own accounts, you will have access to many of the Naviance features.  You will not be able to read your student’s questionnaire responses; nor will they have access to yours should you wish to complete the parent/guardian questionnaire next fall (on the parent/guardian view of the child’s page under About Me/my surveys).  Your student will have access to the application management features but you will only be able to view them. You are encouraged to complete the parent/guardian survey as this is very helpful for both your junior’s guidance counselor and the College and Career Advisor.

Students have had an orientation to Naviance during social studies classes last week (for those that were not present or in alternative classes, Deidre Cuffee-Gray is meeting in small groups throughout the week).  We will offer an evening session for families called the Family College Planning Roundtable on Wednesday, February 26 at 6:00 pm in the ARHS Library.

Below is your registration access code.  Use the code for your initial registration for the site.  It is not a login. It is different from your student’s access code.  Find the site at: student.naviance.com.  Enter 01002 as the zip code.   Look for Are you new here? Click the green link “I need to register” button. (If you previously logged in, please use “forgot username” or “forgot password.”

Registration Codes: see email for code

(Note: If you already logged into Naviance as a parent/guardian – you will see the username you used here: Username: )

You will be instructed to change your password, and you should determine your own username.  Change the e-mail address if you like. I will use Naviance often to communicate with you beginning soon.  (Be sure to keep a record of your Naviance login.)

If you have had an older child registered to our Naviance account, including former or graduated students, we need to take an additional step to link you with your junior as well.  Please contact Crystal Garrity (garrityc@arps.org) or Cathy Tracy (tracyc@arps.org) for help with this.

Beginning on Monday, February 10th students are able to schdule an appointment for our four five minute junior year college & career planning meeting.  I will continue to meet with juniors and parents/guardians through June. You are encouraged to attend the individual family meetings. I will meet with you again in the fall of the senior year.

Regardless of what your plans are as a family for the February break, consider signing up for an information session and tour wherever you or your junior are. There are so many great schools in our area, it is wise to practice what it is like to tour, sit for an information session, and ask questions. Should this not prove possible, consider going on a local college admissions tour in March and/or April Break (Five Colleges, Springfield Area and Worcester are all so close!).

As preparation for the meeting, your student must complete the Naviance Life After ARHS Survey for Class of 2021for College Conference,” under “About Me.”  It should take about 40 minutes. Juniors who are certain or contemplating attending a four year school (even if deferring for a GAP Year), or transferring to a four year school should complete the 54 question survey. Those certain they will start at community college, pursue employment, enlisting in the military, and/or Americorps service work should fill in the 22 question survey. If you have questions or concerns about which survey your junior should submit please contact us.

Please feel free to explore Naviance and to encourage your student to do the same.  Below is information about Naviance features. I look forward to your feedback and to meeting with you in the spring to discuss future plans.

Attention Juniors and Seniors

Permission slips can be picked up in the guidance office and need to be returned to Ms. Garrity in Guidance right before break on  FRIDAY, February 14, THE LATEST.

Exam Schedule Survey Results

On January 16, which was an exam day at ARHS, there was a two-hour delay due to weather conditions.  As a result, ARMS and ARHS swapped the usual ARHS exam-day early dismissal for a late start.  Some students and staff provided feedback in the days after the change that they preferred the late start for exams. To gather more information, the Superintendent sent a short survey to all ARMS and ARHS staff, students and parents/guardians last week to see whether they prefer a late start or an early release on exam days.  They had an excellent response rate of 589 respondents, 233 of whom were students!  The results were interesting, with 62% of students expressing a preference to keep the current system of a regular start time and early dismissal on exam days rather than switching to a late start.

Based on the feedback received through the survey, ARPS will not be making any change to the schedules for exam days at this time. They thank everyone who took time to complete the survey so quickly when it was emailed out.  Your input is extremely valuable any time we consider changes designed to improve our students’ educational experience.

SEPAC February Updates

Please join us at our next meeting, Friday, February 7, 9-10:30am, at Summit Academy which is co-located with the high school. We will discuss privacy regulations and district practices and how these affect SEPAC’s outreach efforts, how they affect community building among families, and how they affect parents’ efforts to support their students’ social connections. We will also discuss bullying.

At our last meeting, we discussed the potential of 6th graders moving to the middle school. We also discussed the results of the 2019 Special Education Survey by the Public Consulting Group. The full report can be found here and a summary will be attached to the January meeting minutes when they are posted.

Also note that a Parenting Strategies and Support Workshop on the topic of School Avoidance will be held February 4 (TONIGHT!) and March 3. Come to either or both sessions. See attached flyer.

As always, you can send an email to sepac@arps.org with meeting agenda suggestions.

Sincerely,

Attention Seniors- 4 Things

1.Can you hear your Friendly Neighborhood College and Career Counselor Weeping about Naviance? Two notes for you.

A.  Password Reset – As of January 27th, Naviance reset the passwords for passwords that didn’t meet new criteria. Use the “reset password” button. Cut and paste the temporary password and make sure there are no extra spaces! then make a new password.

B. Awesome Messages in Spam – Some of Ms. Cuffee-Gray’s emails are being remanded to Spam folders.  You’re missing out on important information. Grrrrrr! Go in your Spam folders and unblock Naviance messages.

2. Are colleges that you applied to contacting you for transcripts and/or mid-year transcripts? When you look on Naviance are your transcripts listed as “Delivered”? Sometimes colleges send this notification because they are waiting for Semester grades even though your Initial Transcript has been sent. Because our semester has just ended, we will send semester grades when teachers have submitted final grades, and they have been verified in mid-February. This is true at most US high schools that operate on semester calendars. If you need a transcript for a different matter, or a college is insisting that the transcript be sent now (we cannot), please check in with Ms. Garrity. She is the person that can give transcripts.

3. Two Important Local Scholarships. DO NOT MISS!  There is an essay required for both scholarships. Come to the Writing Center after school on Mondays to get support. You must request transcript on Naviance A MINIMUM OF TEN DAYS BEFORE THE DEADLINE (your last minute stress will not be our be our last minute stress – take care of your business in a timely manner).

A. Community Foundation of Western MA is a great area scholarship for college bound students. Do not miss this one. https://app.smarterselect.com/programs/62004-Community-Foundation-Of-Western-Massachusetts

B. HCC gives away $200,000 in scholarships every year. Sometimes not enough HCC students apply and that money gets left on the table. If you are considering HCC, YOU NEED TO APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP. https://www.hcc.edu/alumni-and-friends/the-hcc-foundation/scholarships

4. Recommendations. Just a gentle reminder that when you request recommendations for summer opportunities and or scholarships, it is important that you give teachers and guidance counselors a minimum of 14 days notice to write for you. Please allow your recommenders the opportunities to do their very best writing about how great you by giving them the time to write. Requests that give 1 or 2 days to write do not have to be honored. Help us support you – please plan ahead.

Attention Juniors

Class of 2021 Families,

My name is Deidre Cuffee-Gray and I am the new College and Career Advisor here at ARHS. Beginning Friday, January 31st I will be visiting social studies classes to provide an overview of the “Life After ARHS” college and career planning process here (students who are not in junior social studies will be pulled for small group discussions next week).

I am very much  looking forward to meeting you and your juniors this spring!

Juniors will go home with a “Class of 2021 Junior Life After ARHS Planning Handbook” once they meet with me in social studies class. We will also upload a .pdf for you to access the handbook online on February 4th. The handbook has helpful information and a calendar for you and your junior to do some meaningful planning this spring. Juniors will be introduced to Naviance, the college and career planning information system that we utilize when I meet with them. Please encourage your junior to freely explore the site to research careers and colleges.

Parents and guardians were sent their registration codes last year, we will re-send notification through Naviance next week. Please take time to complete the Parent/Guardian Survey for the Class of 2021, this will help both me and your students’ guidance counselor get to know your student(s) better.  If you have an older ARHS graduate, you will have to contact Crystal Garrity, the ARHS Guidance Secretary to reset your account. (Access the survey in Naviance – About Me>Surveys>Surveys Not Started). You can phone her at 413 362-1720, or email at garrityc@arps.org.

Juniors and their families are strongly encouraged to schedule a Junior Life after ARHS Family College and Career Planning with me this spring. We will meet to discuss your junior’s deeper preferences for college and career, and create a plan of action. Beginning February 3rd students who have completed their “Life After ARHS Survey for Class of 2021 (54 Qs)” will be permitted to schedule a meeting (meetings will start the week prior to February Break). Additionally, we will be hosting a College & Career Planning Roundtable on February 26th from 6-8pm in order to provide you with face-to-face general information about the process. A link to RSVP for the event will be in Naviance soon.

If your junior is considering applying Early Decision or Early Action (we can discuss if that makes sense when we meet), we strongly encourage them to set up an appointment for a college recommendation meeting with their guidance counselor or me (if assigned to Deidre Cuffee-Gray) in April or May.

This is an exciting time for you and your junior. It can also be a nerve wracking time as well. Please work with the ARHS College & Career Planning Team to help your junior to BREATHE and de-escalate the panic of this time (or rouse them from their slumber). We are here to provide reasoned, healthy and thoughtful support.

It is not quite spring yet, but the days are getting longer. Consider visiting colleges in the area (there are many great colleges and universities very close to us) or further afield during February or April break.

Sincerely,

Your Friendly Neighborhood College and Career Counselor – Deidre Cuffee-Gray
