On The Same Page Program at Jones Library

The Jones Library is holding its eighth On the Same Page community reading program, this year featuring the memoir Call Me American by author Abdi Nor Iftin.  A variety of programs are being offered to enrich the reading experience of this title and to encourage dialog about the themes the book presents, particularly immigration and African history.  The New Yorker calls the book “Riveting!” and Booklist states, “Absolutely remarkable and always as compelling as a novel… An essential ur-immigrant story, one that is enlightening and immediate.”

The following series of programs will be held during February and March at the Jones Library, and are inspired by topics and themes from the book.  The author event will be held at the Amherst Regional Middle School on Thursday, March 5 at 7 pm. For complete program descriptions, visit the program’s webpage at http://www.joneslibrary.org/onthesamepage.

Schedule of Events:

Tuesday, February 4 at 7:00 pm – Woodbury Room

Long Journey:  Somali Immigrants and Refugees to the United States – Elliot Fratkin will talk about nomadic pastoralism and how this ancient way of life fares in our modern world.  He will also discuss the Somali refugee camps in Kenya and migrants to US.

Thursday, February 13 at 7:00 pm – Amherst Room

Book Discussion of Call Me American – Join us for an in-depth discussion of our selected title, led by Jones Library librarian, Linda Wentworth.

Tuesday, February 18 at 7:00 pm – Woodbury Room

Refugees in Western Massachusetts – Jewish Family Services has played a vital role in Western Massachusetts in welcoming and resettling refugees.  Sara Bedford, New American Program Director, will discuss their work with refugees from around the world, including Somalia.

Thursday, March 5 at 7:00 pm – Amherst Regional Middle School Auditorium

On the Same Page …with Abdi Iftin – Join us for this author appearance as Abdi Iftin speaks about the book and his experiences.  Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Tuesday, March 10 at 7 pm – Amherst Room

Book Discussion of Call Me American – Join us for an in-depth discussion of our selected title, led by Jones Library librarian, Linda Wentworth.

Copies of Call Me American can be borrowed from the Jones Library and branches, requested and checked out from the C/W Mars library catalog, or purchased at Amherst Books in Amherst.

Abdi Iftin is the author of Call Me American, which was named a 2019 Notable Book by the American Library Association and as a Library Journal Best Books: Nonfiction Winner in 2018.  Iftin currently lives in Portland, Maine, where he works as an interpreter for Somalis who have immigrated to the state. Abdi was accepted to the University of Southern Maine, where he will be studying political science. He plays soccer every Saturday in a melting-pot league of Americans and immigrants from around the world.

On the Same Page – Amherst and its programs are made possible with special funding from the Friends of the Jones Libraries.

Attn Seniors: You Got Accepted — Now What? How to Choose a College

Please take time (15 minutes MAX) to note your college decisions in Naviance – Admit, Defer, waitlist, Deny, etc. Also, know that the folks on the College Planning Team are here to support you. Your Friendly Neighborhood College and Career Counselor – Deidre Cuffee-Gray

I was accepted to a “reach” school

Jonathan O., college junior

Jonathan didn’t feel he knew much about college, but he found help with the application process.

If you’ve received acceptance offers from more than one college, congratulations! Your hard work has paid off, and now you get to choose which college is best for you.

Don’t worry about choosing that one perfect college — there’s no such thing. The bottom line is that college is what you make of it: What you do while you’re there matters more than the college name on your diploma. Here’s how to make your decision.

You don’t have to decide overnight, but don’t miss the reply deadline.

Get More Information

You already have a lot of information about each college, but digging a little deeper can help you make the best choice for you.

Ask questions. Create a list of any questions you still have about the colleges you’re considering. You may want to get answers to questions like these:

  • How many students return after freshman year? How many graduate?
  • Does the college offer a lot of majors I’m interested in?
  • What can I do for fun?
  • What kinds of students feel at home at this college?

Get answers. The best place to get an answer depends on the question. Here are some of the resources that can provide information:

  • People who work at the college
  • Current students at the college
  • The college’s official website and its College Search profile

As you search for answers, it’s important to use only trustworthy sources of information and to recognize the difference between fact and opinion. A college’s official website and its admission officers are often the best sources of factual information about that college.

Visit — or revisit — the campuses. If possible, check out a college’s campus to get more information. If you can’t visit a campus, call or email the admission office with your questions. Ask if someone there can put you in touch with current students and recent graduates. Your high school counselor and teachers also may know students who graduated from your high school and now attend the college.

Think things over. You’ve done research and asked questions. Now it’s time to check your own thoughts and feelings. Ask yourself questions like these:

  • How did I feel when I was on campus at each college I visited?
  • Which colleges best match my list of must-haves?
  • At which colleges can I imagine myself as successful and happy?

Compare the colleges. Use your new information to sort the colleges by what they offer and what you want. Make a list of the pros and cons for each college. You can also use College Search to compare up to three colleges side by side.

Compare Financial Aid Awards

This is an important step for many students. The Compare Your Aid Awards tool lets you compare up to four offers side by side. Talk to your family about which colleges work best financially. You should make decisions about financial aid, such as whether you should take a student loan or work-study job, together.

Make Your Decision You don’t have to decide overnight. Many colleges don’t expect your final decision until May 1, so you have some time to make up your mind. But remember that colleges are serious about reply deadlines. If you don’t send your deposit in time, you risk losing your place.

Respond to the Colleges

Once you’ve decided which college you want to attend, inform all the colleges that accepted you about your decision.

Respond to the college you’ve decided to attend. Make sure to send in the following items by the deadline:

  • Your acceptance letter
  • A deposit
  • A separate acceptance letter for financial aid, if required
  • Any other required items

Respond to the colleges whose offers you’re declining. Send a brief note to the other colleges to thank them and turn down their offers. This frees up places for other students.

News for Seniors

As colleges review each financial aid application, they may request family documentation that supports the information reported on the application, a process called FAFSA Verification.

What is FAFSA Verification?

Verification is a process mandated by the Department of Education in which college financial aid offices confirm the accuracy and completeness of the information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). Students are selected for FAFSA Verification by the Department of Education. Students may also be selected for Institutional Verification, in which a college selects a student to confirm the information reported on the FAFSA and other financial aid applications.

How will I know if I have been selected for Verification?

The Student Aid Report (SAR), the report that students receive after the FAFSA has been processed, will indicate if you have been selected by the Department of Education for Federal Verification. The college will also notify you if you have been selected for Federal or Institutional Verification, and will inform you of documentation needed.

What information will be verified?

The financial aid office may need to verify any of the following: data from the federal income tax return, untaxed income, household size, number of students in college, household resources, child support paid, high school completion status, and identity.

What documentation will be requested?

If you need to verify federal tax data, you will be required to utilize the FAFSA IRS Data Retrieval Tool or submit a tax return transcript or a copy of your signed federal tax return. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows you to transmit federal tax data from the IRS to the FAFSA. Families selected for Federal Verification who are not able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool are required to submit a tax return transcript or a copy of their signed federal tax return to the financial aid office. If the college is verifying non-tax information, the college will notify you of additional documentation needed. You should always forward documentation to colleges as soon as possible.

How do I obtain a tax return transcript?

A tax return transcript can be requested in one of three ways:

  • Online at IRS.gov: Click Get a tax transcript. You can choose to receive the transcript online (immediately) or by mail.
  • Phone: Call (800) 908-9946
  • Paper Request Form: Complete IRS Form 4506-T (available on IRS.gov). Mail or fax the completed form to the contact information displayed on the form.

If you select to have the transcript mailed, you can expect to receive it within 5-10 days after the IRS receives the request.

What happens if a student is selected for FAFSA Verification but the family does not file taxes?

If a student is selected for Verification and the student and/or parent(s) does not file taxes, the family should follow the instructions provided by the financial aid office.

How can I prepare for FAFSA Verification?

It’s a good idea to start a financial aid file to prepare for Verification, which can include documentation such as income and financial statements used to complete the financial aid applications as well as application log-ins and passwords. Below is a list of items to consider including:

  • Year-end bank statements and account summaries
  • Year-end pay stubs, W2s, and 1099s
  • Most recently completed tax returns and/or tax return transcript
  • Copy of any correspondence with financial aid offices
  • Private scholarship information

Windham Orchestra Concerto Competition

Each year the Windham Orchestra hosts a Concerto Competition for high school age musicians.  2019 marks the 33rd year of this event.  The competition is an opportunity for students of all instruments, including voice, to audition for a panel of judges, receive feedback on performance, and then present the work with the Windham Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Hugh Keelan.

In recent years the Windham Orchestra has performed with local, world music ensembles, and Maestro Keelan wishes to continue such explorations. Originally conceived as a competition for musicians of the Western art-music tradition, any composition normally accompanied by orchestra may be performed. Contestants may prepare and perform single movements or an entire multi-movement composition.  In addition to the winner’s appearance at a Windham Orchestra Concert, open rehearsal performance opportunities are often offered. This opportunity to play their piece in public can be of great value to the student who has worked diligently preparing for the competition.

The competition is open to serious instrumental and vocal music students in grades 9 through 12 who live or attend schools in the following counties:

  • VT:  Windsor, Windham, Bennington
  • NH:  Cheshire, Sullivan, Grafton
  • MA:  Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire

Any and all eligible students are encouraged to apply. Application deadline is Monday, March 18. The competition itself will be held on Sunday, March 31st at the Brattleboro Music Center, 72 Blanche Moyse Way, Brattleboro VT 05301

Your Spring Cleaning Helps ARHS Earn Money

image0Start your spring cleaning early and help ARHS earn *FREE* money

Did you ever wonder why there’s a huge white donation bin as you drive into the school parking lot? This is one of the ARPS PGO’s effortless fundraisers – easy ways you can earn money for the Amherst schools at no cost for you.

Bay State Textiles collects used clothing and other textiles. Stained shirt? No problem. Ripped towel? No problem. Stinky dog blanket? Well, ok…just make sure it’s clean and dry. In addition to tops, pants, underwear, and coats, they accept boots, sneakers…even flip flops. They also collect stuffed animals, duffel bags, pillows…anything that’s soft. Check out the complete list here.

About 40% of the clothing that’s collected is still wearable and sent to developing countries. The rest is recycled and turned into fiber products and rags. They pay us by the pound so the more you donate, the more money we make!

Let the ARHS Auditorium Shine!

There are so many bright stars within our Theater Company, Choral Ensembles, Bands and Orchestras, yet the theater lighting is so outdated that it’s hard to see them! The ARHS PGO and ARPS FPA are hoping to tune up the current stage lighting, add new performance lighting for the front of the house, and retrofit lighting fixtures to brighten the house.
As a friend or supporter of ARHS, the performing arts – or both – please consider donating to this fundraiser and helping our students shine.

The mission of the ARHS PGO is to promote communication and understanding among families, staff and the Amherst Area Community; to foster a spirit of collaboration by providing a forum for participation and the exchange of information and ideas; and to provide financial assistance where needed to enrich the academic and overall experience of all students. All parents/guardians of Amherst Regional High School (ARHS) students are members of the ARHS PGO.

ARPS Friends of Performing Arts is comprised of parents, guardians and community members dedicated to  providing fundraising and volunteer support to the Performing Arts departments in the Amherst Regional Schools.  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, donations are fully tax deductible.

Thank you for supporting our students.  We encourage you to learn more about the ARHS PGO and the ARPS Friends of the Performing Arts

SEPAC Meeting Today

Please join us at our next meeting, tomorrow, Friday, January 3, at Fort River Elementary School.  We will discuss the results of the Special Education Parent Satisfaction Survey that was conducted by PCG (Public Consulting Group) last spring. Also, we will hear from and provide feedback to Superintendent Morris about the progress of the Grade Span Advisory Group who is looking at the feasibility of moving sixth graders to the middle school.

At our last meeting, we heard about progress to make our school buildings more accessible to those with mobility impairments. The courtyard tiles at Crocker Farm were relaid last summer.  The district is working with Amherst’s Department of Public Works to provide accessible routes into school buildings and playgrounds.  A request for proposals for design services will go out this month that will help the district address more complicated projects like providing accessible routes and bathrooms within buildings. Also in the works is a plan to improve the playing fields in the district, which will include making them more accessible.

Our other major topic on our agenda was hearing about our district’s Special Education Budget and budget processes. We heard comparisons of our spending to similar districts in our region and about different sources of state funding and how they will change under the new Student Opportunity Act. SEPAC requested that the new Adaptive PE program at the high school be provided with a sustained budget going forward as it has proven to be successful and has been desired for some time.

Please see our agendas and meeting reports on our website when they are posted for additional details.

Help ARHS Shine with improved auditorium lighting!

lightsThe ARHS Performing Arts Department holds dozens of shows and concerts every year. There are so many bright stars within our Theater Company, Choral Ensembles, Bands and Orchestras. If you have been to our auditorium, you are likely aware that the physical space is not equal to the to the quality the performances. We can help change this!
The ARHS Parent Guardian Organization and ARPS Friends of the Performing Arts are hoping to tune up the current stage lighting, add new performance lighting for the front of the house as well as retro fit fixtures to brighten the house. We need to raise $17000 to make this happen!  We have already raised over $2000- Can you help us reach $5000 by the end of January?
We are calling on all supporters of the school and the arts to help us achieve this lofty goal. You can donate online through: https://givingtuesday.mightycause.com/story/Arhspgo or use the donate button on our  https://www.facebook.com/donate/429884037965801/.  Donations can also be mailed to the ARHS PGO, 21 Mattoon Street, Amherst, MA 01002.
