Dangers of Vaping

isThis summer the Massachusetts Department of Public Health launched a statewide information campaign called The New Look of Nicotine Addiction and it’s all about vaping.  The website of the campaign, GetOutraged.org, is a resource to help parents of teenagers better understand what vaping is, how vaping can harm their teens developing brains and to provide ideas for how parents can talk with their children about vaping and JUULing.

Youth are being targeted by the vaping and tobacco industries.  Unfortunately, their tactics are working with 1 in 5 high school youth in MA reporting that they use e-cigarettes.  How? Vape “juices” come in thousands of different flavors, such as Swedish Fish, s’mores, and mango.  Sweet flavors attract young people and are the leading reason that youth are vaping.

But these products are NOT harmless; they contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol, NOT water vapor. The aerosol can contain cancer-causing chemicals, ultrafine particles, and heavy metals like nickel, tin, and lead.

Nicotine is highly addictive and can damage a young person’s developing brain. Nicotine exposure can lead to mood disorders and can permanently lower impulse control. Teens can get addicted more easily than adults and nicotine can prime the adolescent brain for addiction to other drugs.

For more information about vaping, please visit GetOutraged.org.  There you can see what vaping products look like, get more answers to frequently asked questions, and learn more about how to talk with your kids about vaping.  There is also a toolkit of useful resources for schools and community-based organizations.

Talk with your kids about vaping and make sure they know it’s harmful.

Attached is a link for FAQ (4 pages in all): http://files.hria.org/files/TC3480.pdf

ARHS Strategic Planning Call for Community Feedback

The Amherst Regional Public Schools community is in the process of developing a three-year strategic plan to drive its work between 2019-2020 and 2021-2022.

Let’s imagine that 2022 is now, and that we are looking back on the change process that has moved the district/school community from where it was in 2018 to what it has become in 2022.

Through this process, we will describe what the district/school community is in 2018, what we would like it to become in 2022, and the strategies we imagine will take us from the present (2018) to our envisioned future (2022).

Please visit https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdWbuukwOcTO9ps-ZZva784KHpD3k6p2Zqk7Pq1iPYbb1l_YQ/viewform to enter the responses from the “Envisioning the Future” activity. This information will be compiled for the entire ARPS Planning for Success Team. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tim Sheehan at SheehanT@arps.org.

Please complete this form and submit it by Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

Messages and Deliveries to Students

Students may be paged to come to the front office to pick up messages and deliveries twice during the school day: the first time is just after 10 am, when the lunch period is about to start. The second time is just at the beginning of the last class of the day. We limit public address announcements to those two times  to minimize disruption to classes.

If you wish to deliver an item (such as money, keys, a lunch, or an assignment) that your child has forgotten to bring to school, please drop it off at the main office. You must bring the item to the office by 12:30 pm in order for the student’s name to be included in the list of students to be paged at the end of the day.

To leave a message for a student, please call 362-1701 or 362-1705. As with deliveries, you must leave the message by 12:30 pm if you want the student to be paged at the end of the day. Remember that the main office is open between 7:30 am and 3:30 pm. Any message outside of those hours should be left at 362-1700.

Absences

When a student is absent, parents and guardians are encouraged to call 362-1718 to report the absence. Leaving a message at this voice mail eliminates the need to write an excuse note for the absence. IMPORTANT:phone calls are not accepted after the day of the absence. Excuse notes are not accepted after 48 hours from the student’s return to school.

For more detailed information about attendance procedures, see the Attendance FAQ

Some Important Reminders from the ARHS Attendance Office

The high school has been receiving a number of messages on its full-day absence line from parents excusing their child’s tardiness. Please note that the absence line (413-362-1718) is to be called ONLY for full day absences. To summarize our policy, A student who is tardy must bring in a note from a parent to be time stamped by the Main Office and signed by a Dean. Students who are being dismissed early also must bring a note from a parent to be turned in at the Main Office and time stamped. In addition, students must always sign in on the Tardy or Early Dismissal sheet in the Main Office with their full name and time of arrival/departure.

Telephone calls to excuse a tardy or early dismissal will not be accepted. If the information is left on the absence line, it will not be recorded.

We appreciate your adhering to these procedures.

All of this information can be found starting on page 1 of the Student Handbook. This handbook is on the main Amherst/Pelham Regional High School website under the Parents/Guardians tab. Please read this documentation as it contains a lot of information with regard to attendance and attendance reporting.

Please note that it takes 24 hours to reconcile the sign in sheets and notes, so no changes are recorded in PowerSchool until the next day.

Florence Bank Community Choice Awards- Vote Today!

Dear families,

Each year, Florence Bank gives away $100,000 to community non-profits through its Community Choice grants program. Florence Bank customers vote for the non-profit of their choice & all non-profits getting at least 50 votes receive a grant.  The non-profits receiving the most votes get up to $5,000(!) through this program.

Last year (2017), the ARPS PGO received  almost 100 votes & $1,413. Yay!  The grant money went towards classroom support, special projects, field trips & more.

This year, the PGOs of the ARPS PGO (Crocker Farm, Wildwood, Amherst Middle School, & Amherst High School) are campaigning jointly again to maximize our votes.

** Each Florence Bank account holder is eligible to vote once for the community organization of their choice. **
** The ARPS PGO is urging people to vote (at least please consider voting for) for the “Amherst Regional Public Schools PGO”, the name of our joint non-profit. **

There are 2 easy ways that people can vote:
(1) Online – Visit https://www.florencebank.com/vote to view the online voting site & can cast a vote online for the “Amherst Regional Public Schools PGO”.
(2) Paper Ballot. Ballot for printing attached. Ballots are also available at any Florence Bank location.  Ballots should be submitted at the bank or turned into your PGO.

Voting is open until December 31st.
Thank you for your support!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Ms. Custard has twenty-two years of experience working in Amherst and has been a licensed administrator since 2014. She is a dedicated faculty member who
