Veteran’s Day Events in Amherst

Happy-Veterans-Day-Clip-Art-1-465x197A Massachusetts Vietnam veteran and a documentary chronicling the stories of seven local veterans are the highlights of this year’s Veterans Day commemoration in Amherst.

A U.S. Navy SEAL veteran from the Vietnam war and member of Veterans for Peace and Warrior Writers will speak at this year’s Veterans Day ceremony in Amherst.

Preston H. Hood, III, who served in Vietnam in 1970 in combat with Navy SEAL Team 2, is the author of two books of poetry and is widely published in numerous journals and anthologies. The retired school teacher and administrator lives in Colrain and is active in veteran causes in the Pioneer Valley and a member of the Friends of Ward 8 program with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in Leeds.

The ceremony will begin at 11:00 am on the North Common in front of Town Hall and will feature a flag presentation with veterans from Amherst Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts. Steven J. Connor, the director of Central Hampshire Veterans’ Services, will provide an update on veteran programs and events in Amherst and the Pioneer Valley. A reception will immediately follow and then a 30-minute documentary featuring Hood and several area veterans will be shown at Amherst Cinema at 12:30 p.m.

The documentary, Hunter in the Blackness, examines post-traumatic stress with each veteran describing their service, their challenges with returning home and their recovery. Directed and produced by Cambridge film director Federico Muchnik. “Hunter in the Blackness offers a message of resilience and hope,” said Muchnik.

A panel after the documentary will include Hood; Dr. Scott Cornelius, clinical psychologist with the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System; and Dr. Kathryn Basham from the Smith College School for Social Work. The ceremony, reception and documentary are free and open to the public.

Letter From Principal Mark Jackson

November 2, 2017

Dear ARHS Parents and Guardians,

I’d like to address the topic of ‘vaping’ or, ‘e-cigarettes’. Over the last year, this phenomenon has made it to the high school. So, in the interest of us – home and school – working together, the time seems right to name the issue.

To start, I’ve found this Center for Disease Control[CDC] website  helpful, It provides a general orientation to the topic. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the language and research.

https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/basic_information/e-cigarettes/index.htm

In the ‘What’s the Bottom Line?’ section, the CDC makes this recommendation:

  • If you’ve never smoked or used other tobacco products or e-cigarettes, don’t start.

The intent of the CDC is to discredit the marketing pitch that suggests e-cigarettes are a risk-free alternative to tobacco. In their judgment, the risks are real.

Below is a brief summary of our work to address this issue:

  • On page 28 of the Student Handbook is the section of the discipline code that prohibits e-cigarette use in school and on school property. This includes possession of related paraphernalia. In our Health course, our teachers highlight the risks associated with e-cigarettes.

  • Any use of e-cigarettes is also a violation of the MIAA Chemical Health Policy, which all athletes sign and pledge to abide by. Athletes whose e-cigarette use is documented will not be allowed to participate in games or matches.

  • We have also found students with vaping paraphernalia and discovered, on closer examination, that the real purpose of the device was to smoke marijuana. So, for parents and guardians who discover vaping paraphernalia, I would encourage you to probe beyond the initial explanation you receive.

Lastly, this CDC website provides a helpful framework for talking to your child about the risks associated with e-cigarettes. https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/documents/SGR_ECig_ParentTipSheet_508.pdf

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Thank you.

Gracias.

“…the Science Department at ARHS was able to purchase three electronic dissolved oxygen sensors…This year, students were able to set up water samples and observe what happened to the dissolved oxygen in real-time under different conditions…This took the science of dissolved oxygen, which past classes have mostly just discussed in theory, and made it observable and real to students.” –Nat Woodruff, Science Teacher

“…thank you for the great viewfinders…I thought they really helped the kids make better compositions in my Painting class. We are sure to use them in many classes for years to come…As always, your support for the Art Department is truly amazing.” – Mr. Stauder, Art Teacher

“…thanks again for helping us build our repertoire of authentic labs and allowing us to purchase equipment that we otherwise could not afford!” – Mike Thompson, Science Teacher

“…The grant money was used to fund interview workshops with private consultant Mark Efinger. Mark’s workshops were a wonderful supplement to the communication and transition skills we target within the program…It was a joy to watch my students stretch themselves in this way and experience the confidence-building positive results…” – Kathleen Olson, SE Teacher

Senior Tidbits from Ms Ross

Hello Seniors,
Read this one carefully.  There’s a lot to do!  Be sure to read websites for your colleges and follow their instructions!

  1. If you are applying early action to UMass, they must have all supporting documentation to your application by November 20.  This includes your official test scores, sent by the testing companies.  ARHS cannot send test scores!  If you have not yet requested that your scores go to UMass or any of your colleges with early deadlines, do it today.  It can take a couple weeks at this time of year
  2. Remember, if you have a November 1 deadline and either want or need to have your progress report sent to your colleges, put your name on Mrs. Cappelli’s list.  This is the only way we will know that we need to send the grades.
  3. Your goal should be to apply to your colleges well before the deadline.  Deadline dates are not target dates.  Remember, deadline has the word DEAD in it.  Don’t tempt computer systems when they are overloaded.  They have been known to CRASH!  If you are ready even a month before your deadline, send your application in, irrespective of whether all of your recommendations are written.  .  See Mrs. Cappelli or Mrs. Tracy (room 309) if you want us to send your materials earlier than the date posted in Naviance.
  4. Be sure to complete the steps in the 8-page handout you received in Advisory on October 5.  (It is also in the Naviance Document Library under Senior Documents.)  All steps are critical to successful completion of this process.  Then, check in with your teachers regarding your recommendations.
  5. If you are planning to send different versions of your Common Application to different colleges, here’s how to do it:
    — After submitting the first one, for the next application that you want to change, just
    — Go to My Colleges on the Dashboard. Then go to the college whose app you want to change. Click on Review and Submit Common App. Then, when you are in the Common App itself, click on Edit within the field you want to change.
  6. Reminder, Thursday, November 2 is FAFSA night.  Come to the cafeteria at 7:00 sharp.  If you have not registered at org, please do it today.
  7. Be sure to get an FSAID, electronic signature, for you and a parent before doing your FAFSA.  You cannot complete it without them.
    — Go to fsaid.ed.gov.  Click on the picture of the lock!
  8. If you will be applying early decision, don’t forget about the early decision agreement.  This is very important.  See a Guidance secretary immediately if you don’t know what this is about!
  9. Now that some of you are about to apply, you need to know that it takes colleges a long time to acknowledge that materials have been received, even electronically.  Don’t worry if it looks like your materials are not there.  If you see online that your application is not complete TWO WEEKS after the application deadline, you should call the college.  They usually find missing materials.  If they can’t find something, tell Mrs. Tracy or Mrs. Cappelli and they will send it again.
  10. If you are applying to any colleges with rolling admission, including the Massachusetts state universities (Westfield, Worcester, Framingham, Fitchburg, Bridgewater, MCLA and Salem) plus many other public and private colleges, see a Guidance secretary about the date you want us to send your materials.  We have preliminarily entered January 1 for the Massachusetts state universities.  It’s up to you to decide what to do.  See me or your counselor if you need help deciding.
  11. If you are applying to Boston University or the University of Rhode Island, remember, December 1 is the magic day.  All students who hope to get a merit scholarship must apply by December 1, no exceptions.  There are other colleges in this category as well.  Be sure you know whether your colleges have scholarship deadlines that differ from application deadlines.
  12. If you are applying to any of the University of California campuses, you must apply by November 30.  That is the closing date for all applications.  They do not use the Common App.  There are several essays to write; you must self-report your transcript.  All of this will take time.  Don’t wait until close to the deadline to do the UC application.  It won’t work!
  13. All University of California and some Common App schools expect you to enter your own transcript information into their forms.  They do not read official transcripts unless you enroll, at which time they check your reporting against the actual document.  Entering data can take some time.  Come to Guidance; get your unofficial transcript.  Don’t wait until the last minute!
  14. Remember, if you are applying to any other out-of-state public flagship universities, you should apply ASAP, even early action if possible at this point.  .  The longer you wait, the smaller your chances of admission in some states.

Hang in there.  You can do this!

Statement from Dr. Michael Morris

It has been a privilege to have spent my educational career in our districts working on behalf of the children of Amherst, Leverett, Pelham and Shutesbury, and I am honored that I have been allowed to continue that work as the Superintendent of Schools. I want to thank the members of the School Committee for developing an open and thoughtful process in making this decision and for affording me this opportunity. The support of the School Committees, the outstanding Amherst Regional Public Schools faculty and staff, and the broader community has been invaluable during my time as Interim Superintendent. I look forward to continuing to build on those strong working relationships as we move forward with our vital work to support our communities’ most valuable resource—our children. Thank you again to the School Committee for showing your confidence in me in the vote for my appointment as well as over the past 13 months; I am excited for the journey ahead that we will travel, together, for the betterment of our students, families, staff, and community.

Sene-Gambian Scholars Program Sponsorships and Scholarships

Amherst Regional High School has partnered with schools in Senegal and The Gambia since 2011 to provide a lifechanging cultural exchange experience for high school students, promoting understanding and respect across racial, ethnic, and religious differences. To date, ARHS has sent two groups of students to West Africa and received two from Senegal.
A third cohort of ARHS students is now preparing for an exchange visit to our partner schools in February 2018. These students are busy learning about West Africa and fundraising for the program’s scholarship fund. Many families cannot afford the $3,000 cost of the trip, but we have a goal of providing enough support to enable any student willing to work the chance to go.
Here’s how you can help support the students and promote crosscultural dialogue:
1. Become a SeneGambian Scholars Program Sponsor for $100
Receive a sponsorship poster to display in your business or office and have your business
card or logo included in all Sene-Gambian Scholars publications and presentations.
2. Provide a scholarship for a SeneGambian Scholar for $250 or $500
Receive all the benefits of sponsorship plus a guest presentation by the scholar you support at a meeting or gathering of your group.
Sign up to be a sponsor or scholarship provider at this link: https://tinyurl.com/SGSsponsors
Or send your business card or logo and contribution to the address above, c/o coadviser Susan AbdowBe sure to include your contact information.
Make checks payable to ARHS.
Questions? Please contact program coadviser  Bruce Penniman at penniman@english.umass.edu.
Thank you for your support! 2016 scholars and hosts at the site of Alex Haley’s Roots.

From Myra Ross

Hello Seniors,

I have revised yesterdays’ Naviance and college application handout, in part thanks to some of your questions. It is in the document library and will be linked to this e-mail.

In response to what to do if you have already requested transcripts for colleges in your back-up plan if you are applying early decision, the answer is that you must delete those colleges entirely and re-enter them without requesting a transcript. It’s a Naviance quirk.I don’t like it either!

Remember: please plan to attend both the College Admission Night next Thursday, October 12 and the Financial Aid Night on Wednesday, October 18, both at 7:00 in the cafeteria. . You will get helpful hints and good information at both, and it looks like the Red Sox will be all done by then!

Remember: If you want help completing your FAFSA, plan to come on Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 sharp, in the cafeteria. Please sign up long in advance at fafsaday.org so we can get sufficient professional staffing.

The document linked below will tell you what to bring, including a laptop or tablet; there is wifi in the cafeteria.

Please complete the Senior Questionnaire and make the appointment for your senior meeting with me if you have not already done so.

Myra Ross
