Attn Seniors: ARHS Scholarship Info/ Applications

Hello Seniors,

This e-mail describes scholarship procedures for 2019.  Find the local scholarship/memorial awards booklet and the ARHS Scholarship Application form linked to this e-mail.

1. The ARHS local scholarship/memorial awards booklet and the 2019 Scholarship Application are also posted on the ARHS website:   http://arhs.arps.org/academics/guidance_office/college_and_career_planning/and in the “document library” on your Naviance home page in a folder called “Local Scholarships.”  Print copies will also be available in the Guidance Office.

The booklet is divided into two parts.  The first contains scholarships that use the ARHS Common Scholarship Application.  The second contains local and regional scholarships that have independent application procedures.

The ARHS scholarship application process will be entirely electronic.  You will submit via e-mail for each scholarship for which you decide to apply.

Directions:

  1. Save the application (attached to this e-mail) into a folder on your computer.
  2. Complete the application AS A WORD DOCUMENT.
  3. Change the title of the scholarship at the top, and likely the essay you paste at the bottom, for each scholarship you apply for.
  4. Attach the completed application to an e-mail and put the EXACT TITLE of the scholarship you are applying for in the subject line.
  5. Submit the scholarship application to: scholarships@arps.org
  6. Repeat the process for each application you intend to submit.  Just change the name of the scholarship at the top of the application, the essay you paste into the bottom, and the subject line of the e-mail.  That’s all there is to it!

We hope you will submit carefully completed applications for the scholarships for which you believe you qualify.  Remember to tailor essays to the specific qualifications described for each scholarship.  Awards are designed to invite seniors with many different interests, abilities and backgrounds.

Our deadline for receiving ARHS scholarship applications is 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 1, no exceptions!

2. Many scholarships are not in the booklet because they are not local.  Check the Scholarships section of Naviance ASAP.  Application procedures and deadlines vary.

If official transcripts or letters of recommendation are required for scholarships listed in Part Two or in Naviance, be sure to enter the name in Naviance under:

colleges /transcripts /request transcripts for scholarships or athletics.

Indicate which materials need to be sent in the notes section at the bottom.  Make sure you provide a deadline and deadline type (postmarked or received by).

  1. The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts: http://www.Communityfoundation.org.  offers various scholarships and zero-interest loans.  You submit one online application and they decide what you qualify for.  They require the completed application including essay, your Student Aid Report from the FAFSA and an unofficial transcript, submitted online.  Their deadline for all materials is March 31.  E-mail Miss Garrity (garrityc@arps.org) and ask her to send you your unofficial transcript.  If you are applying to UMass, you should definitely complete the Community Foundation application because that’s how you qualify for the Wilbur Ward scholarship.

  1. IMPORTANT:  If you think you may be going to UMass Amherst, you should absolutely apply for the Charles Dickinson scholarship.  Women choosing UMass should also apply for the Lizzie Dickinson scholarship.  See booklet for instructions.

Good luck!!

Myra Ross, College Advisor

Writing Workshops for Students

ARHS Staff will be offering a series of writing workshops for students after school beginning this Tuesday, February 28th, and running every second Tuesday of the month through April. We’re tackling some of the most common reasons students come to the Writing Center and/or the Library for help with essay writing.

Here’s what they’re covering:

  • Thursday, February 28th from 2:30-3pm. We’ll be tackling how to break down research questions–and how to create your own–in a fun and informal workshop open to all students. Questions? See Ms. Lewis in Rm 141 or Ms. Stocker in the library for more info!
  • Tuesday 3/12  @ 2:30-3:00 – Starting from Sources: Building a good academic paper starts with finding the right sources, taking detailed notes, and managing citations. Students will practice evaluating resources for relevancy and identifying key ideas for note taking.
  • Tuesday 4/9  @ 2:30-3:00 – Thesis Statements: For our third workshop, we’ll be looking at how to organize a paper around a strong thesis statement.

All workshops will take place in the library; students are welcome at all three or to just drop into one.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to lewisa@arps.org or stockere@arps.org.

Audition For The Pied Piper On 3/4

PIED PIPER horizontalAuditions will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) musical production of THE PIED PIPER Monday, MARCH 4th at the Amherst Middle School Cafeteria from 4:15 pm to 6:15 pm. All those auditioning should arrive at 4:00 pm and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of those cast in the show will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the auditions.

What do you do when your town is overrun by ravenous rats? Sara, an orphan girl, and the other Townspeople of Hamelin Town turn to the Mayor of Hamelin and the Council when their town is threatened. They then call on the Pied Piper to save them from the troublesome creatures. The Mayor’s children, staff, and the Cooks also join in the endeavor. Find out what happens when the town chooses not to pay the Piper and the children are led away from the town along with the rats! Follow the original twist on this familiar story as it weaves its way through a landscape full of surprises!

Students from Kindergarten to 12th grade are encouraged to audition. Assistant Directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week, and to take on essential backstage responsibilities. There are 50-60 roles available, with parts in every age group. This is a group audition, and no advance preparation is necessary–though a smile always helps! There is a $55 Registration Fee due at the audition for all those who are cast—additional siblings $30 (fee waivers are available).

The Missoula Children’s Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup. The MCT Tour Actor/Directors will conduct rehearsals throughout the week from 4:00-8:30 Monday, March 4th – Friday, March 8th. Not everyone will need to be present at every rehearsal.

THE PIED PIPER will be presented on Saturday, March 9th at 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm at the Amherst Middle School Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students under 18 and seniors.

For more information, go to “Children’s Theater” at ALSCT.org, or call Susan at 413-461-6722
