Important Info for Seniors

Hello all-

You have reached the homestretch!  I am writing today with some exciting updates.  On Saturday, May 29th Northampton will lift all emergency Covid restrictions.  Here is the press release.  This means that we will be holding graduation in the Pines Theatre with your families and friends in attendance rather than out at the pavilions. Each student will receive an envelope with 8 tickets for the Pines Theatre (you will receive these tickets at the ice cream social on Friday, June 4th).  If you need a ride to Look Park from ARHS for rehearsal please let Ms.Terry Ominsky know at ominskyt@arps.org. We will be running a bus that morning at 10:30. Friends and families should plan to arrive at Look Park at 3:00pm. All people inside of the Pines Theater will be required to wear a mask and bring their own seating.  This is a grassy concert arena so families should be prepared with lawn chairs or blankets. We will still be streaming the event for family and friends to watch remotely (anywhere in the world).  It will be streamed on the ARPS YouTube Channel.  We will also stream graduation to two of the pavilions in Look Park. If you would like additional tickets (beyond 8) you may invite family members to the park to watch your graduation from one of those pavilions. If you have friends or relatives that are uncomfortable with the larger crowd in the Pines Theatre you are also welcome to invite them to watch it streamed with smaller groups at the pavilions.  If you would like a few pavilion tickets please contact Ms. Terry Ominsky at ominskyt@arps.org.

Once graduation is over (approximately 5:30pm) we will transition to a non-school sponsored dinner and after party.  The after party will include dancing in the Pines Theatre and games out of the Pines Theater in the adjacent pavilion and fields. You are welcome to invite a guest to the dance party/games but we will not be able to feed your guest dinner.  This party will run until the park closes at 8:30pm.  If you have a friend or relative that is willing to volunteer to help with lunch, dinner or the after party please have them fill out this form by Monday, May 31st.

Attached you will find a schedule of events for the next two weeks.  Find the link here.  This schedule includes the exam schedule, the last day of school, virtual senior awards ceremony, elementary school visits, car parade and graduation day information.

Also, complete the “Class of 2021 Final Senior Survey” in Naviance. Regardless of your path after graduation, you must complete this survey. If you need assistance, please contact Ms. Cuffee-Gray, or Ms. Garrity.

The Class of 2021 survey is mandatory for all seniors. This is an obligation (parents/guardians are able to complete if necessary).

  1. Log into Naviance

Amherst Juneteenth Community Celebration

On Saturday, June 19th 2021, for the first time, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts will celebrate Juneteenth as an official state holiday. The Town of Amherst, in partnership with The Civil War Tablet Committee and The Mill District, will celebrate Juneteenth with a daylong event spread over four locations. Uplifting African American culture, traditions, and community heroes near and far, including Amherst residents Christopher, John, Henry, James and Charles Thompson who served in the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts 5th Cavalry among the Soldiers in Texas for the liberation. They are laid to rest in the West Cemetery located in Amherst Center.

June 19th or Juneteenth celebrates the day Major General Gordan Granger led US troops into Galveston in 1865 to take over Texas, one of the final hold out states to admit defeat during the Civil War, enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and formally marked the day that all slaves in the United States were freed.

Juneteenth is a second Independence Day; a jubilee for African Americans, welcoming all who believe in freedom for all through gathering, art, history, music, food, education and spiritual acknowledgment.

In 1893 the regional chapter of the GAR- Grand Army of the Republic Veterans Association- commissioned tablets to recognize soldiers from the Amherst region who served in the Union forces, including African Americans from the 54th Regiment and 5th Cavalry. Amherst resident, Dudley Bridges Sr., spent the last years of his life advocating and fundraising to honor these handcrafted memorials with prominent and befitting placement within the community. We are pleased to announce that these handcrafted memorials, which have been hidden from public view for decades, will make a long awaited debut in an exhibit as part of the day’s celebration.

We are honored to be joined by distinguished guest speakers and presenters, including William Harris, President and CEO of Space Center Houston, nephew of Dudley Bridges Sr., grandson of both Christopher Thompson and Gilbert “Gill” Roberts of Amherst, as Master of Ceremony, and grateful for the outpouring of community support that will enable this event to empower our youth, inspire our peers, and serve as record for future generations.

Juneteenth Amherst Event 2021 Snapshot: Saturday, June 19th

Tribute to our Soldiers 10:00 am at the West Cemetery in Amherst Center

Commemoration and Civil War Tablet Exhibit 11:00 am at the Bangs Center Courtyard (70 Boltwood Walk)

All locations for this event will follow any relevant COVID-19 protocols and guidance as provided by the State of Massachusetts

Message from Principal Sadiq

It has been great seeing so many students and educators back in the high school. The adjustment to being around so many people again and following the routines of everyday school has its challenges, but is going smoothly overall.

Teachers continue to work tirelessly to provide high quality educational instruction in this new hybrid teaching model. During this week of learning and reflecting, teachers are sharing the things that have worked well, we’re listening to the feedback we’ve been receiving, and thinking about what adjustments we need to make so the hybrid experience is better for everyone.

Throughout the week some students and families have been letting us know that their original choice to be in-person or remote no longer feels like the best option for them. The change back to remote from in-person is not a challenge, but we need students and families to either commit to being fully in-person or to make the change back to remote ASAP. This will help us deal with some of the many challenges that come with making the change from remote to in-person. We’re trying to come up with an equitable way for that change to happen for as many students as we can safely accommodate. As soon as we figure that out, we will let families know.

We appreciate the continued support families have been giving to their children and our school during this transition, and throughout the school year. Your feedback, and patience while we make these adjustments are valuable to us. Please continue to let us know what’s working and what isn’t working for your family. Thanks and take care.

ARHS Senior Selected as U.S. Presidential Scholar’s Program Semi-Finalist

I am very proud to congratulate one of our students, Arden E. Lloyd, on becoming one of the 15 semifinalists who has been chosen to represent Massachusetts for the U.S. Presidential Scholar’s Program. Out of the millions of graduating high school seniors from across the country, just over 6,500 students were identified as candidates for this program. Arden is one of only 625 semifinalists selected in the U.S. These semifinalists form the pool from which the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars will be chosen in Mid-May.

The Presidential Scholar’s Program recognizes and honors some of our Nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. We are very proud of Arden, and wish her continued success.

Order your Signs Supporting our ARHS Class of 2021

Let’s send the Class of 2021 some love and support as they prepare to say their final goodbye to our schools! Signs are just $10 each and can be ordered here:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfNYr4tb_vKkxAop0fqIXFYXQ-XM8Fil2N6Fw6nRl1_YGbRaA/viewform?usp=sf_link .

This past year has been without so many of the traditional events that celebrate and recognize our soon to be graduates, and a year of online learning has made it especially challenging for them to feel connected to their friends and school.

Let our seniors know their communities are proud of their achievements! All proceeds will support signs for seniors.

Additionally, fundraising efforts are also underway to fund a several non-school sponsored activities for the Class of 2021. To learn more about the plans and how you can help support them, please visit:  https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/arhsclassof2021/arps-pgos or https://docs.google.com/document/d/1i7Hz247USxQzKNrkrSDC19kyS8oRCQlIf1GMoFX7hcI/edit?usp=sharing.

Miss Garrity is seeking reliable, hardworking students to do a Community Service ALP (Alternative Learning Plan) for the Yearbook next year!

ALP students would be responsible for:

  • Learning how to edit photos in Photoshop
  • Learning how to use the Picaboo software
  • Creating backgrounds and collage layouts
  • Homework would include attending and photographing events, performances, etc.

To express interest, please email Miss Garrity at garrityc@arps.org with your reason for wanting to take this course and a brief recommendation from a guidance counselor or a teacher with whom you have taken a class in photography, graphic design, journalism, or other related course. In-Person Learning Information

If you missed Wednesday’s information session for students and families returning to In-Person learning, the video can be viewed on StreamYard.

The slide decks from the presentation can be viewed here:

Here is a Virtual Tour of ARHS for students who were unable to attend the School Tours on 4/30..

Bus Routes for those who requested transportation can be found at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rDQsR2YSe3V3jnWt_5ME09lC_2bxs6Ss/view

Please note:

  • Some stops have changed and will now require students to walk a little further to the bus stop than they have in the past.
  • Capacity on each bus is greatly reduced because all students have been assigned a seat with appropriate social distancing from students outside their immediate family.
  • Students who requested transportation were assigned to a bus for their primary residence only due to the complexity of developing the routes within a very limited time frame.
  • Since seats are assigned, students who did not sign up for transportation on the family survey will not be allowed to board.
  • Students will not be allowed to ride any bus other than their regularly assigned bus, either to or from school.
