Jones Library Teen Events

Following are upcoming events for teenagers at the Jones Library:

  • The first is a special program we developed in partnership with Special Collections in honor of Jones Library’s Centennial Celebration. We’ll look back at what life was like 100 years ago and how monumental events of 1919 shaped life today. We’ll also examine writing technology of the era as well as sample some of the snacks popular at the time.  Please pre-register at teens@joneslibrary.org or 413-259-3091.
  • Postcards from the Past: a teen time travel adventure, will be held on October 17, 2019, from 4-5 pm at the Amherst Room.  The vent is open to those 11-17 years old.
  • Our  Teen Advisory Board is looking for students to serve on its board.  The board needs help to help us better plan teen programming at the library. We had our first meeting last week and are off to a great start but could always use more teen voices in shaping the library’s offerings. TAB meetings are the first Tuesday of the month. This is a great opportunity for teens looking for leadership experiences and would definitely look great on both job and college applications. Next meeting is November 5, 2019 from 5:30 to 6:15 pm in the Crafts Room. The board is open to those ages 11-17.

College Admissions Program at Jones Library on 10/22

Whether your child is (or you are) a high school senior applying right now or a sophomore or junior just getting started, Shulman will clarify options, dispel myths, answer your burning questions, and send you on a saner, less stressful path.

Jill Margaret Shulman is the founder of In Other Words, a college essay coaching and application review service. From Guidance: ATTN Seniors

Hello Parents and Guardians of ARHS Class of 2020 Students,

This is Deidre Cuffee-Gray, the College and Career Advisor, emailing to check in with you regarding the college planning and  “Life after ARHS” process here at Amherst Regional High School.

I joined your seniors’ guidance counselors on Day 1 to give a brief overview of the college planning process and I want to briefly share that information.

First of all breathe! This is an exciting time for you and your  senior. You are a part of an amazing academic community that is here to prepare your student for this process. I’m excited to join ARHS.

Regardless of a senior’s chosen path, I would love to meet with you and your senior to listen to what their plans are for “Life after ARHS.” All seniors have an opportunity to schedule a senior college planning meeting with me. If you did not schedule a junior college meeting, please strongly consider setting up a meeting earlier in the fall with your senior. We want to support seniors to be planful about the paths that they are considering choosing – this is true for 4 year college/university, community college, GAP year, employment, volunteer corps like Americorps or the military.

For seniors considering a four year college or university, they must complete a “Senior Questionnaire for College Conference 2020” in Naviance prior to being able to set up a meeting. This survey must also be completed for seniors to meet with their guidance counselor for a school counselor recommendation.

We would like to encourage you to create or log onto a Parent Naviance account. Please take time to complete the “Parent/Guardian Survey 4 Senior College Conference” survey. This will allow guidance counselors to learn about your senior from a parent/guardian point of view.

We will begin scheduling appointments after the add/drop deadline on September 5th.

There are a number of events planned in October. We sent your senior home with a College Planning Handbook, please take a look at it. I have listed below as well.

The ARHS Guidance Team is looking forward to working with the Class of 2020.

  • Be sure to check Naviance for upcoming College visits. Naviance has the most up-to-date information on who is coming and when they will be there.
  • WRITE YOUR COLLEGE ESSAY!!! Beginning 10/7  2:30-3:30. Mondays after school college essay and college application support. Stop procrastinating!! Details will follow.

October 7

  • Essay Day. Seniors sign up for college essay support from Amherst College students. 30 minute slots during the school day. See Crystal Garrity in the Guidance Office to sign up.
  • Requests for school portion of applications (transcript, recommendations) must be in Naviance for November 1st college deadlines.  Make recommendation appointment with counselor

October 9

  • NCAA Eligibility Conversation. Join Victoria Stewart, ARHS Athletic Director and panel of college coaches and athletic directors to learn about being a scholar athlete during your college years.

October 10

  • College Planning and Naviance Overview in Senior Advisory;  Make Up Day Oct 11

October 16

  • Smith College essay-writing presentation; Campus Center Carroll Room; 7-9 pm; all welcome. Free. No registration necessary.

October 24

  • 2020-2021 FAFSA and CSS Profile available for completion; Use 2018 federal income tax return; complete fin aid forms ASAP.  Meet fin aid deadlines

From Guidance: ATTN Juniors

Juniors are recommended to  take the PSAT during the school day at ARHS on Wednesday, October 16th. The PSAT is a practice version of the SAT, which most juniors will take in spring. The PSAT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship competition, for which only juniors are eligible. The College Board provides free SAT preparation through Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/psat) to students who take the PSAT. Sign up in the Guidance Office. The cost will be approximately $17, waived for juniors on free/reduced lunch.

Plan your standardized test-taking schedule early to avoid conflicts with athletic, family, and performing arts events in the winter and spring. Recruited athletes should test early (December is recommended.). Most ARHS students take both the SAT and ACT, and many also take two SAT subject tests.

SAT dates: Dec. 7, March 14, May 2, June 6, Aug. 24

ACT dates: Dec. 14, Feb. 8, April 4, June 13, July 18

ED or EA or RD? Oh My! A College Admissions Primer

Amherst, MA – Does the college admissions process seem overwhelming and confusing?  And just what do those initials mean?  Jill Margaret Shulman, author ofCollege Admissions Cracked, will shed a light on the process for parents of the college-bound in a presentation on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 7 pm in the Woodbury Room of the Jones Library.

College admissions doesn’t have to be scandalous or crazy-making!

She has evaluated applications at Amherst College and Williams College for nearly a decade and has taught at the New School and the City University of New York.
