ED or EA or RD? Oh My! A College Admissions Primer

Amherst, MA – Does the college admissions process seem overwhelming and confusing?  And just what do those initials mean?  Jill Margaret Shulman, author ofCollege Admissions Cracked, will shed a light on the process for parents of the college-bound in a presentation on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 7 pm in the Woodbury Room of the Jones Library.

College admissions doesn’t have to be scandalous or crazy-making! Whether your child is (or you are) a high school senior applying right now or a sophomore or junior just getting started, Shulman will clarify options, dispel myths, answer your burning questions, and send you on a saner, less stressful path.

Jill Margaret Shulman is the founder of In Other Words, a college essay coaching and application review service. She has evaluated applications at Amherst College and Williams College for nearly a decade and has taught at the New School and the City University of New York. She lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, with her husband (and two children, whenever they are home from college).

Volunteer Opportunity with DCF

The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) offers a unique opportunity for community volunteers to make a difference in a foster child’s life. For a few hours of your time each month, you can participate on a panel called the Foster Care Review Unit that helps plan for the future of children in DCF care.

The Foster Care Review Unit makes decisions regarding children who are placed in foster care for six months or longer, assessing how well their needs are being met and what progress has been made toward establishing them in a permanent living situation. A Volunteer from the Community is one member of the 3-person panels that make these decisions.

Volunteer case reviewers are community members who are not employed by DCF. Case reviewers choose to volunteer in the DCF area office most convenient to school, work or home.

Global Warming: A Problem for Penguins

Amherst, MA – Get informed during Climate Preparedness Week, as Dyan deNapoli, also known as The Penguin Lady, presents a program titled Global Warming: A Problem for Penguins at the Jones Library on Saturday, September 28 at 2:30 pm in the Woodbury Room.

Penguins are an indicator species, and they are alerting us to the health of the environment they live in. It is now unmistakably clear to scientists that penguins are being negatively impacted by climate change. In fact, it is the top threat to penguin populations today. In this eye-opening presentation, best suited for adults and older students (ages 12 and above), the various ways in which global warming is affecting all 18 penguin species will be discussed. Action steps that individuals can take to help penguins and the environment will also be part of the conversation.

This talk will be given by Massachusetts native, Dyan deNapoli. Dyan is an internationally recognized penguin expert, TED and Nat Geo speaker, and award-winning author. Prior to founding her company, The Penguin Lady, she worked as a Senior Penguin Aquarist at Boston’s New England Aquarium for 9 years. The Great Penguin Rescue, her inspiring and bestselling book about saving 40,000 penguins from the Treasure oil spill in South Africa, was published by Simon & Schuster’s Free Press in 2010. Dyan will have copies of her book available for purchase and signing.

During September 24–30 each year, Climate Preparedness Week is organized by Communities Responding to Extreme Weather (CREW), an organization dedicated to learning, service, and actions that better prepare communities for extreme weather events. To learn more, visit http://www.climatecrew.org/.

Jones Library Programs on Civics and Democracy

Brush up on your civics savviness with this first in an upcoming series of programs on civics and democracy in the Woodbury Room of the Jones Library at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 10, 2019.

Amherst’s former State Rep. Solomon Goldstein-Rose will explain the basics of local, state, and national government systems, expand on the complex set of institutions that form public policy, and lead an interactive exercise to help participants think about where advocates can tap in to make a difference. This session will be appropriate for those with little to no experience with government systems, as well as those with great understandings of institutions but with a desire to become more effective activists.

Solomon Goldstein-Rose, 25, grew up attending the Amherst Public Schools, where he gained a passion for civic engagement and activism. He majored in Engineering and Public Policy at Brown University, interned in the Obama White House, an office in Congress, and a U.S. Senate campaign, and was elected to the Massachusetts legislature at age 22. During his time as State Rep, Solomon wrote monthly guest columns for the Amherst Bulletin, many of which shed new light on aspects of the legislative process and culture in Massachusetts. He also hosted civic engagement events including a monthly dessert and learning conversation and the Amherst League of Women Voters’ CivicsFest. Solomon left the legislature after one term to shift his efforts to full-time, national and global climate change work.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Jones Libraries and the Woodbury Fund.

Free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.

Pilgrims of Woodstock

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the musical event at Woodstock in the Woodbury Room of the Jones Library at 4 pm on Saturday, September 14, 2019.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the famed event, author and popular culture historian John Kane will take you inside the Woodstock Festival in this presentation based on his new book Pilgrims of Woodstock.  This presentation offers a vivid and intimate portrait of the overlooked stars of the festival: the everyday people who made Woodstock unforgettable. The photographs by Richard F. Bellak and interviews capture attendees’ profound personal moments across hundreds of acres of farmland, as they meditated, played music, cooked food at night, and congregated around campfires. For three days, they helped and relied on each other in peace and harmony. For most, it was a life-changing event.

John Kane is faculty in the design and media department at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. He is the author of Pilgrims of Woodstock: Never-Before-Seen Photos (University Press of Indiana) and The Last Seat in the House: The Story of Hanley Sound (University Press of Mississippi). Dr. Kane grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts, and now resides on the seacoast of New Hampshire.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Jones Libraries and the Woodbury Fund.

Free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.

Attn 9th Graders: SBIRT

The state now requires all schools to provide 9th grade students with a preliminary drug and alcohol screening. The process is known as SBIRT [Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment]. Our nurses have been trained to administer it. SBIRT focuses on prevention and early detection in the school setting. This screening tool will enable school nurses to detect risk for substance use-related problems and to address them, in partnership with families and counselors, at an early stage.

School Lunch Information for the 2019-2020 School Year

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The School Nutrition Department is so thankful for all of your support last school year and we are very excited about the upcoming year. The District is fortunate to be partnering with Project Bread for another school year to further enhance menu offerings. In addition, the department is actively exploring ways to expand breakfast access for all students and to incorporate more local food.

The cost of lunch is increasing by $0.25 to $3.25 per meal. This increase is required under the National School Lunch Program which sets a minimum price for the State. The cost of reduced price meals is not changing.

As a reminder, children receiving free and reduced lunch benefits during the 2018-19 school year are entitled to the benefits through September 30, 2019. Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year

Dear ARPS Families:

I hope the summer months are allowing time for reflection, enjoyment, and renewal.  With the 2019-2020 school year starting soon, I wanted to reach out to share the schedule of events that are fast approaching.

As much as many of us have enjoyed the pace of summer, I am also excited for the coming school year.  As author JB Priestley stated, “I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.”  A primary reason for my excitement for the upcoming school year is the talent, dedication, and commitment I witness in all of our schools on a regular basis.  I know our 2,650 students will be returning to schools with a firm commitment to their success and personal growth.

I would like to thank our families and community members for supporting our schools and staff by participating, volunteering, and collaborating with ARPS.  We are proud to educate and help foster such talented and inspirational children who are not only our sole focus for all that we do, but who also encourage us, as a district, to expand our skills to better support each individual student.  I would also like to thank our Parent Guardian Organizations (PGOs) for their amazing and continuous support of our students and our families.  They have played a vital role in our district’s success and I encourage families and guardians to join our remarkable PGO teams.

I invite you to celebrate the new year with students and ARPS staff members at the annual First Day Celebration on the Amherst Town Common on Tuesday, August 27th at 5:00 p.m. This free event will be filled with music, food, games and fun activities.  We hope to see you and your family there.

On Wednesday, August 28, we will welcome our students in grades one through 12 back to the new school year.  This first day of school will be a half-day for students, meaning the middle school and high school will dismiss at 12:00 p.m. and the elementary schools will dismiss at 1:20 p.m.  Our preschool and kindergarten students will begin school after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 3, following student orientations the prior week.

I hope that you are able to enjoy these final few weeks of the summer break.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Morris, Superintendent
