Upcoming Coming Together Community Conversation

comingtogetherPlease join us for: “Community Conversations: Planning Some Action Steps”
Tuesday, October 27, 7:00PM – 8:45PM

We invite everyone in the community to come together at The Jones Library to brainstorm, discuss, form action teams, and plan to initiate action steps to help dismantle racism in our community and beyond.

We will invite participants to suggest action projects and the organizers will offer suggestions as well – things “ordinary” people can do locally to make a difference. After some brief discussion there will be an opportunity for each person to select a proposed action step and meet with a small group of others who are interested in pursuing that idea together.

We see this as a continuation of:
a well-attended community conversation that happened last fall,
ongoing discussions that have occurred in meetings and/or film showings in each of our sponsoring organizations over the past year,
the call to action at the end of the NAACP walk a few weeks ago, and
the question, “What can we do?” that has been raised repeatedly by local people who care about dismantling racism.
This is part of our ongoing work of building a powerful movement for racial justice.

Racism tries to divide us, silence us, and make us feel powerless in the face of systemic oppression. Together we can accomplish things we can’t do alone. All of us have limited time, but many of us want to be sure we are taking some effective action. This meeting is for people of all racial backgrounds and all identities. Please join us Tuesday, October 27th at 7PM.

Yours in solidarity,
Coming Together: Understanding Racism, Working for Justice & Building Connections

THE VICTORIAN LADY: DRESSING FROM CORSETS TO GLOVES

Join us on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:30pm for The Victorian Lady: Dressing from Corsets to Gloves with performance artist Kandie Carle. Come discover the fashion and customs that existed during Emily Dickinson’s lifetime. While dressing in actual vintage and authentically reproduced undergarments, clothing, and accessories, Kandie Carle adds humor, history, and intriguing anecdotes about fashion, home life, and etiquette of men and women during the Victorian era. The Victorian Lady program brings to light some of the differences and similarities between us and our Victorian ancestors. The event will take place in the Woodbury Room of The Jones Library with refreshments following the performance.

Kandie Carle has been working in the theatre since 1980 as an actress, dancer, and singer through the United States and abroad. Ms. Carle created this one-woman show in 1996 and takes her audience on a journey of discovery by using clothing and accessories as a tool. Throughout the presentation, she shares insights into the clothing, lifestyle, manners, etiquette, and customs of the men, women, and children of the Victorian era. Included are interesting anecdotes and “myth busting.” The performance is full of audience interaction and tailored to those in attendance. With many years of research in social history and fashion along with humor and grace, Ms. Carle shares her love of these eras with her audiences.

Free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Cynthia Harbeson at 413/259-3097.

Capital Conversations Talk to MassDOT about transportation investments for your region

What current and future highway projects in your region are important to you?

Do you have an innovative idea to maintain our roads and bridges?

How important is public transit, pedestrian, or bicycle facilities to you?

Do general aviation airports or Registry of Motor Vehicles branches in your region need investment?

How much transportation funding should go into maintaining our existing roads, bridges, and public transit systems and how much into expanding services and facilities into new areas?

MassDOT and the MBTA are preparing five-year capital plans, blueprints that will guide investments in our transportation system between 2017 and 2021. The Capital Investment Plan (CIP) determines how we prioritize our largest investments, covering all transportation projects – everything from highway and municipal projects to regional airports and rail and transit, including the MBTA and Regional Transit Authorities. These Capital Conversations will help to guide our five-year Capital Investment Plan process as well as upcoming planning processes for statewide bicycle, pedestrian and rail plans. We want to hear from you about how those investments should be prioritized in order to maintain and modernize the Commonwealth’s transportation facilities. How can we improve our transportation systems, increase transportation capacity where existing facilities are inadequate, and build new projects to help communities to prosper and residents to get where they need to go?

Representatives from MassDOT and the MBTA will be on hand to hear your input about transportation needs and capital priorities. Please help spread the word about these Capital Conversations to friends, family and business associates. Your participation is critical to our success.

Monday, October 26, 6:00 p.m.

ARPS Listening Session – 10/19/15

The District is currently exploring the possibility of consolidating the Regional Middle and High Schools into a singe building. This exploration is the result of a significant funding gap at the Regional level, a declining student population and questions from the leaders of the four Regional towns about when and whether such a consolidation might occur. Input from students, families and community members about this proposed consolidation initiative and the financial, educational, and social opportunities/challenges it present, is vital. A Community Listening Session is being held on Monday, Oct. 19th with Tours of ARHS starting at 5:30pm and the Listening Session begins at 6:30pm in the ARHS Library.
Here is a link to more info on the district website: http://arhs.arps.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_926913/File/Parent%20Engagement%20Flyer%20(1).pdf

Correction: A Letter from School Committee Member Kathleen Traphagen

Local friends with kids in the Amherst schools, there are 3 big projects happening-or being considered this fall. Now is a good time to pay attention, get your questions answered and make sure your voice is heard. 1) Wildwood School Building Project (not a great name because the options under consideration could impact ALL elementary students). This project will either (if town approves $) 1) renovate WW, 2) build a new WW or 3) re-organize our elementary schools to create two elementary schools for all Amherst students: a preK-1 at Crocker Farm and a new second-sixth grade school. 2) consolidating the middle and high schools into a 7-12 school in the high school building; and 3) regionalizing preK-6th grades just as we now have 7-12 regionalized (meaning some combination of Pelham, Shutesbury, and Leverett would join Amherst to create a PreK-12 Regional District. Lots happening! My school committee colleague Richard Hood has been posting excellent information about all this and I have been remiss. But I’m going to take his lead.

Amherst, Shutesbury, Leverett and Pelham — parents — coming up there are lots of opportunities to learn more and make sure your voices are heard about the significant school changes being considered this fall. Wildwood School Building Project – not just about Wildwood! — Community Forums Monday October 26 at 3:30 and at 7:00 in the high school library . 7-12 Consolidation: Thursday October 15 at 6:30PM at Shutesbury Elementary School and Monday October 19 at 5:30PM at ARHS: “Listening Sessions” and Saturday November 7 9AM-3PM a “Hurricane Revisioning Summit”. Regionalization: Tuesday October 6 6:30 at ARHS, and Wed Oct 21 in Leverett, location TBD. Also November 18 at 6:30PM, Shutesbury Elementary School. Hope to see you at any and all of these!

Help Us Raise Money For Grants!

GRANTSWe raised over $17K for the ARHS PGO Grants Program last year! Let’s beat that amount this year!! The funds ARHS receives annually from Stop & Shop is limited only by the number of cards we register.  Please take a moment to REGISTER (or re-register) your card, it benefits all our students! It couldn’t be easier! Enter the first three letters of your last name and your 13-digit Stop & Shop card number and click the “Look Up” button. On the next page where it says “school 1” enter Amherst Regional High School’s ID #05167, click “Register” and please make sure to take the last step by clicking “confirm my information.”

Another way to help raise Stop & Shop funds is to greet shoppers on their way into the Hadley store and ask for their support. A two hour shift at Stop & Shop translates to about $400 at the end of the year for ARHS, which directly benefits your student! There are still 2-hour shifts available. Can you fill one? Click here to sign up!

Thank you!

Jones Library Author Night

On Tuesday, October 22, 2015, at 7 pm, local author Newton Frohlich will discuss his recent award-winning book, The Shakespeare Mask, in the Woodbury Room at the Jones Library.

The Shakespeare Mask is a historical novel that explores the life of Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. The book is a meticulously researched exploration of Tudor England that asks a compelling question: What if the author of the greatest works ever written in the English language wasn’t who we think he was? This book recently was awarded the IPBA Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal for Historical Novels.

Newton Frohlich is the award-winning author of The Shakespeare Mask: A Novel; 1492: A Novel of Christopher Columbus, the Spanish Inquisition, and a World at the Turning Point (St. Martin’s Press); and the nonfiction Making the Best of It: A Common-Sense Guide to Negotiating a Divorce (Harper & Row). He spent fifteen years researching and traveling for The Shakespeare Mask and is a member of the Shakespeare Oxford Society and the De Vere Society.

Free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.

Wildwood Study & Town Elementary School Options

From the Superintendent’s Newsletter:
The work on the Wildwood Building Project is moving forward and there are upcoming events to share information and gather input from our community. This FAQ document, based on questions that have come from staff, parents/guardians, and members of our community, offers background information and clarifies many aspects of the project. The three options that have been approved by the MSBA for analysis are to renovate the current Wildwood School; to rebuild a new Wildwood School; and to make unified, town-wide schools (Crocker Farm for all PreK-1 students; a new school for all grades 2-6 students). The first community forums are scheduled for September 29th at 3:30 pm and 7:00 pm at Amherst Regional Middle School Auditorium. Another forum will be scheduled in October, and we will share that date once it is finalized. Please stay updated throughout the process, and ask questions on our Facebook page or by visiting the project website.

African Scholars Conducting Hillside Pizza Fundraiser to Support Exchange Trip

The African Scholars Program’s Ebola-delayed exchange trip to Senegal and The Gambia is now scheduled for February 2016, and a group of 11 and two teachers are preparing for the experience of a lifetime. A goal of the program is that no one be excluded because of the cost of the trip, and two of the scholars are organizing a fundraiser to help their own cause. They are taking orders for high-quality Hillside pizzas and cookie dough, to be delivered to ARHS on October 9. Orders can be placed online at http://igg.me/at/teZuSHR-hWU, and the deadline is October 4. Thank you for helping these hardworking students earn their way to Africa! Questions? Contact Hannah Ackermann at hannahrackerman@gmail.com.
