Frankenreads: A Celebration of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Amherst, MA – As 2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the Jones Library celebrates her contribution to literature and the arts with special programming for all ages during the month of October in conjunction with Frankenreads, an international celebration of all things Frankenstein.

Frankenreads is a project of the Keats-Shelley Association of America, funded by a Chairman’s grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus (1818) by encouraging people around the world to organize or participate in events celebrating the novel.  For more information, please visit https://frankenreads.org/

Programming begins with a Frankenstein Film Festival, which will take place on alternating Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 pm throughout the month, with the first screening on Tuesday, October 2.  For the complete program of film titles, pick up a flyer on your next visit to the library or visit the library’s website at www.joneslibrary.org/Frankenreads for more details on the program series.  All the films are rated PG or not rated.

On Saturday, October 27 at 2:30 pm, Dr. Elizabeth Young presents “Black Frankenstein”, in which she explores the racial connotations of the Frankenstein story in the United States over the last two centuries. She will show how authors, artists, and activists — African-American and white — have situated the Frankenstein monster in racial contexts and used the monster’s story for both radical and conservative political purposes. Elizabeth Young is Carl M. and Elsie A. Small Professor of English at Mount Holyoke College.

On Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm, Dr. Lise Sanders presents “Reading Gender and Sexuality in Frankenstein”, a discussion focusing on gender and sexuality in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, drawing on the biographical and historical context of Gothic literature, women’s writing, and feminism in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and reading the novel in light of modern scholarship exploring issues of monstrosity, power, and difference.  Lise Sanders is Professor of English Literature and Cultural Studies at Hampshire College.

The Youth Services Department is offering a range of activities for youngsters, including a Frankenreads Book Club, a Monster Mash Family Dance Party, a family matinée, and a spooky craft.

Complete details can be found at www.joneslibrary.org/Frankenreads.

These events are generously funded by the Friends of the Jones Libraries and the Woodbury Fund.

Free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.

Light refreshments will be served.

News for Seniors from Ms Ross

The ARHS Guidance Department now has a Twitter account. Follow us at: https://twitter.com/GuidanceArhs
This account is not going to replace e-mail.  It is for us to send you timely reminders and maybe even some fun facts.  I might use it sometimes to urge you to check your e-mail for a message from me.  Please do not respond to the account.  We will not answer you.  If you want to reach me or your counselor, send an e-mail!

As of this moment, 124 colleges are scheduled to visit ARHS between next Monday, September 10 and early November.  This is the most ever!  Many visits will be in the next three weeks.  Please look for the list of college visits in your Naviance account and come to see the representatives, who will likely be the people who will read your application.  The first three visits you attend will not count against you in the attendance policy.  After three, absences of more than 20 minutes will count, but you should take the opportunity to meet with representatives anyway.  Think about how lonely they will be if no one shows up!

Think about completing at least one early application.  UMass’s early action deadline is November 1.  The other UMass campuses, which offer substantial merit scholarships only to students who apply early action, have deadlines of November 1 and November 15.  Applying early will force you to get your application done early so you will have more time to write other essays that may be required of you.  As soon as you decide on your first early application, list it in Naviance and in your Common Application (if appropriate).

Here are three important things to do tonight if you haven’t already done them:
* Get your lime-green release form signed so you can bring it to Miss Garrity tomorrow
* Go into your Naviance account, and under “colleges/letters of recommendation/” select the teachers who have agreed to write for you.  Send them a note of thanks.  As soon as you know at least one college you will apply to, put it in “Colleges I’m Applying To.”  Teachers will see the early deadline and will know to prepare your recommendation on time.
* Go tofafsa.ed.gov and get your FSAID, which is the electronic signature for your FAFSA, which you can complete any time after October 1.  Your parent(s) will need one too, if they don’t already have one for your older sibling.  Do not use your arps account as your e-mail address.  It will be closed before you are a college student.  Use a Gmail or other public domain account.

COMMUNITY PRESENTATION | Reducing Anxiety in Kids

51C6VVpbSNL._SX404_BO1,204,203,200_Jessica Minahan, MEd, BCBA
will present a FREE program OPEN TO ALL.

September 13, 2018 — 6-8 pm
Amherst Regional High School Library

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that one in four thirteen-eighteen year olds has had an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Without intervention, these children are at risk for poor performance, diminished learning, and
social/behavior problems in school. Understanding the role anxiety plays in a student’s behavior is crucial and using preventive strategies are key to successful intervention. Effective behavior plans for these students must avoid the reward and punishment-based consequences from traditional behavior methods and focus instead on the use of preventive strategies and on explicitly teaching coping skills, self-monitoring, and alternative responses. Easy to implement preventive tools, strategies, and interventions for reducing anxiety, increasing self-regulation, executive functioning, and self-monitoring will be discussed.

Jessica Minahan, MEd, BCBA, is a board certified behavior analyst and special educator and a consultant to schools nationwide (www.jessicaminahan.com). Jessica has over seventeen years of experience supporting students who exhibit challenging behavior in urban public school systems. She is a blogger on The Huffington Post, as well as the author of The Behavior Code: A Practical Guide to Understanding and Teaching the Most Challenging Students, with Nancy Rappaport (Harvard Education Press, 2012) and author of The Behavior Code Companion: Strategies, Tools, and Interventions for Supporting Students with Anxiety-Related or Oppositional Behaviors (Harvard Education Press, 2014).

Sene-Gambian Program Seeks Donations

The Sene-Gambian Scholars Program at ARHS is seeking donations to bring students and teachers from Gunjur, The Gambia, to visit the United States in the spring of 2019.

Last February, 13 ARHS students and 3 faculty members were hosted by families in Gunjur, attended classes in the local high school, and visited cultural sites in The Gambia. The ARHS students would like to host the Gambian students next spring, but the cost of visas and international airfare is beyond the means of most families in The Gambia. The Sene-Gambian Scholars are thus trying to raise enough funds for at least 3 students and 1 faculty member to travel to the U.S. The estimated cost is $1,500 per person. The Sene-Gabmbian Scholars have already raised $1,000, so the goal of the current drive is $5,000.

Read more, see pictures, and make a donation at gofundme.com/Senegambian-scholars. Thank you for your support!

Summit Academy Relocation Frequently Asked Questions

I Important Ideas:
A. Are Summit Academy and ARHS one school or two separate schools within the
same building?

An important relocation goal is for Summit Academy to maintain its
identity as a separate school. There will be many opportunities for the two schools to
interact and collaborate. But the overriding priority is for the two schools to operate
separately.
II Important Information
A. Within the ARHS building, where will Summit Academy be located?

Summit Academy will be located along the hallway that contains the ARHS gym. There are six classrooms along this hallway that are now exclusively designated for Summit Academy use. See the following map for details.
B. Who is the principal of Summit Academy?

Mr. Slovin remains the Summit Academy principal. Mr. Jackson is the principal only of ARHS.
C. How will the community access Summit Academy?

The Summit Academy main entrance is on the West side of the ARHS building. The door closest to the Summit Academy sign leads to the Summit Academy main office See the following map for details. Visitor parking spaces will be designated. Summit Academy guests and families do not need to come first to the ARHS main office.
D. What is the phone number for the Summit Academy main office? 413-362-1729.
E. Does Summit Academy have same schedule and bell system as ARHS?

Summit Academy will be on a separate schedule. ARHS passing bells will not sound in the Summit Academy section of the building. ARHS PA announcements will not be broadcast within Summit Academy. Fire alarms, however, will sound throughout both schools.
III Important Routines
A. How will Summit Academy students enter and exit from school?
Students will enter the building through the Summit Academy main entrance, which is on the West side of the building. Students will exit Summit Academy through the Summit exterior doors, not through the ARHS.
B. Are Summit Academy students transported separately from ARHS students?
Students will maintain the same routines as in the past and be transported on the same buses as ARHS students. The only change is that Summit Academy students will be dropped off nearer to the Summit Academy entrance.

C. Do Summit Academy students eat lunch in HS cafeteria?
Summit Academy will have its own lunch room and not eat in HS cafeteria.

D. Are students of Summit Academy assigned to a high school guidance counselor and have access to the ARHS college counselor?

Summit Academy students will retain their current counselors. But they will have access to the ARHS college counselor.

E. What is the decision making process for a Summit Academy student to take a class at ARHS?

The IEP team reconvenes and considers if there are any changes appropriate to be made to the IEP that would include transition to the high school.

F. Do Summit Academy students participate in ARHS extracurricular activities ex. Sports clubs?

Summit Academy students have always participated in extracurricular activities including sports and afterschool clubs. They will continue do so.

From ARHS College Counselor Myra Ross

SENIORS:

  • On the first day of school, you will receive a handbook about the college admissions process. Read it carefully and keep it for reference. Note the calendar of admissions events and deadlines on the back cover. Also look through the Naviance Document Library for relevant articles.
  • By now, you should be actively thinking about what you will do after high school. You do not need to decide until almost the end of the school year, but good decisions emerge from good research and planning, including pre-application campus visits to 2yr and 4yr colleges. You should own this self-discovery process, but parents/guardians can provide valuable assistance.
  • IMPORTANT: Schedule a fall post-secondary planning meeting with me (preferably including your parents/guardians). First, complete the online Senior Questionnaire for College Conference, under “About Me” in Naviance (www.connection.naviance.com/amherst). Your counselor will use information from the questionnaire and a personal interview with you to write recommendations, required by most colleges and many scholarship donors. Parents/guardians may wish to complete the optional Naviance Parent Questionnaire for College Conference, available in parent Naviance accounts.
  • You can get support for your college essays at the ARHS Writing Center. Whether you are brainstorming topics, reviewing a draft, or finalizing your work before you hit submit, Amanda Lewis can support you during the college essay writing process. Schedule an appointment in 141 or drop in to learn more about how she can help you tell your story and showcase your strongest writing.
  • Register for the Oct. 6 SAT or the Oct. 27 ACT ASAP. The SAT registration deadline with fee waiver is Sept. 7 (Sept 26 with late fee), and for the ACT, Sept. 21 with fee waiver (Oct. 5 with late fee). Other SAT dates will be November 3 and December 1. The ACT will also be offered on December 8. All fall SATs are offered at ARHS. The ACT is never at ARHS.  Students registered for free/reduced lunch can get fee waivers for the ACT and SAT. Go to the Main Office any time this month.
  • Representatives from at least 100 colleges will visit ARHS this fall. Parents and students are welcome. The schedule will be posted in the Guidance Office and in Naviance as it evolves. Get a pass in advance from Guidance. Three total visits will not count toward the ARHS attendance policy. Try to attend.  For the calendar of visits, click here.
  • UMass will hold several Saturday and Sunday Fall Campus Visit programs for seniors. Check umass.edu/ admission/fall-visit-days-2018 for dates. There’s a lot that you don’t know about UMass, so attend one! Registration is required. They will also hold a Majors Fair in early November (date TBA).
  • The 2018-19 Common Application is available at commonapp.org. You might want to begin working on it. Some of you may need to also use the Coalition application, (coalitionforcollegeaccess.org). Work on your essays before school starts!

JUNIORS:

  • Juniors should take the PSAT during the school day at ARHS on Wednesday, October 10. The PSAT is a practice version of the SAT, which most juniors will take next spring. The PSAT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship competition, for which only juniors are eligible. The College Board provides free preparation through Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/psat) . Sign up for the PSAT in the Guidance Office. The cost will be approximately $17, waived for juniors on free/reduced lunch,  Juniors with diagnosed disabilities who use testing accommodations at school should apply for accommodations on college admission tests ASAP. Find links to the applications in Naviance or contact Mrs. Tracy in room 309 (362-1715, tracyc@arps.org) for help. The process can take several months.
  • I will meet with juniors in classroom settings in January and individually with families beginning in February. Every junior should meet with me in the spring. College questions that come up before then should be directed to your counselor, who will consult with me if there is a need. In the meantime, you can begin to use the search and other research features of Naviance.
  • Plan your standardized test-taking schedule early to avoid conflicts with athletic, family, and performing arts events in the winter and spring. Recruited athletes should test early (December is recommended.). Most ARHS students take both the SAT and ACT, and many also take two SAT subject tests. SAT dates: Dec. 1, March 9, May 4, June 1, Aug. 24. ACT dates: Dec 8, Feb 9, April 13, June 8, July 13.

NINTH & TENTH GRADE STUDENTS:

  • The best college preparation for younger high school students is to develop a strong academic work ethic resulting in broader knowledge and skills. We encourage you to read for pleasure and to find meaningful activities in and out of school. This includes service activities, artistic, musical, theatrical, entrepreneurial, athletic or academic pursuits, paid or volunteer work, or anything that fosters growth in creativity, responsibility, leadership, knowledge, and self-confidence.
  • For early practice, sophomores may want to take the PSAT during the school day on Wednesday, October 10. The cost will be approximately $17. Register in the Guidance Office. The College Board does not provide fee waivers for sophomores.  Sophomores who are earning a B+ or better in honors biology or honors chemistry should consider taking that SAT Subject test next June. You will need to cover some units on your own. Because our U.S. History curriculum does not align well with the SAT Subject test, only students with extensive independent knowledge of US history should take the test. All other subject tests are best taken in grades 11 and 12.
  • TEST PREPARATION OPTIONS  Preparing for standardized tests is important. Scores are almost always substantially higher when students know what to expect. 20 hours of preparation is recommended. There are several free test-preparation opportunities:  Open a Method Test Prep account for free ACT and SAT preparation. Find a link to MTP on your Naviance home page. MTP includes audio and visuals and contains many short modules. See a Guidance secretary if you need help. Find official SAT study materials at collegeboard.org. These include: Free sample SAT questions, Free full SAT practice test, SAT Online Course, SAT Study Guide  Find free official study materials through the SAT Khan Academy partnership at khanacademy.org/PSAT or /SAT. Find official ACT study materials on actstudent.org. Use the new ACT Academy (academy.act.org) to prepare for the ACT. Take the diagnostic test. A multi-media study plan will be developed for you.

Does My Voice Count? Voter Suppression Then and Now Discussion at the Jones Library

Amherst, MA – Explore some of the history of voter suppression in this country and take a look at the current state of things at this presentation by Jim Lemkin on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 7 pm in the Woodbury Room of the Jones Library.

In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was enacted, marking the beginning of the end of voter suppression and disenfranchisement of blacks and people of color in the United States. However, in 2013, a key provision of the Voting Rights Act was struck down opening the doors to a vast array of new obstacles.

This slide presentation and discussion follows the work of a handful of students, moved by compassion and the call to action for social justice by going to Mississippi to help register black voters during Christmas vacation in 1965. Discussion will also explore the consequences of the 2013 repeal of a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. More than 50 years later, what has changed?

Jim Lemkin was a volunteer photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He traveled the rural roads of Mississippi in 1965 documenting the earliest efforts to legally register previously disenfranchised black voters.

Free and open to the public. For more information about this event, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.

Rising Seniors!

  1.   If you are a high achieving first generation college applicant, a student of color or a low income student, who takes primarily honors and AP classes, you might want to look at: http://blog.collegegreenlight.com/blog/college-fly-in-diversity-programs/

It is a list of special fly-in programs offered by many liberal arts colleges and some universities.  The programs are free.  Applications are required for these programs, which are designed to help you learn about colleges and help them learn about you!  It’s a great way to figure out what you like.

  1.   If you are a very high achieving student with almost all honors and AP classes and with a family income under $60,000, you might want to apply to colleges through the highly competitive Questbridge program, which offers full scholarships to many of the country’s most selective colleges.  They have a late September deadline. Go to questbridge.org for complete information.  If you are seriously thinking about Questbridge, tell or e-mail me, your recommending teachers, and your counselor ASAP.
  2.  Remember, the summer is the best time to write application essays.  You will not be a happy camper if you leave this chore for the fall.  Many of you will need to write additional essays in the fall so getting ahead of the game is a good idea.  The Common Application and Coalition Application essay prompts are at the end of this e-mail.
  3.  Remember – your task is to find at least one foundation school – a college that you like, can afford and to which you know you are admissible.  It would be great to find two or three of those.  Of course, beyond that you should apply anywhere you would like to attend!
  4. Plan your fall testing schedule ahead of time.  If you plan to take the September 8 ACT or the August 25 or October 6 SAT, you might want to register soon, before you forget about school for a while.  The registration deadlines without a late fee are August 3 for the September ACT, July 27 for the August SAT and September 7 for the October SAT.  You can register late for the September 8 ACT until August 17 and late for the August SAT before August 15.  If you qualify for a fee waiver, see Mrs. Cappelli before June 26 or get one in the Main Office after July 1.  Unused fee waivers will expire in August!
  5. It would be a good idea for you to do a lot of test prep in the weeks immediately preceding the summer ACT and SAT.  When you are in summer mode, it’s harder to get your adrenaline going for tests.  I’ve heard that across the country, last year’s August SAT scores were lower than for other tests likely because of the summer mode phenomenon.  If you are going to take a summer test, be sure to be on the top of your test-taking game by test time!
  6. Remember that demonstrated interest is increasingly important to colleges for admissions purposes.  Visit, visit, visit!  Get the name of your admissions counselor at colleges you will apply to and stay in touch.
  7. Set up interviews at colleges you would like to learn more about.  Read their websites for information about how to go about making these appointments.  To prepare, think about your interests and skills and about some of the activities you would like to participate in.  familiarize yourself with the college via the website and other materials you may have, and develop a couple questions about things that matter to you.  If the college is not nearby, arrange for a local alumni interview.
  8. I expect that most of you have secured your teacher recommendations.  Don’t forget the last step – naming those teachers in Naviance.  Go to colleges/letters of recommendation/ and select your teachers from the dropdown list.  Unless you will be applying to colleges for which you might want to send different recommendations, you should select “for all colleges” for each teacher you select.  You can amend this later if necessary.  You might want to put a quick thank you to your teachers in the Notes section.  Remember – if you decide to apply to a college early (November deadline), you need to let your teacher know ASAP so the recommendation will be ready on time.
  9. In the next few months you may begin to receive mailings or e-mails from honor societies, Who’s Who, National Society of High School Scholars and various other organizations who say they can get you scholarships and other advantages.  Some of these are scams outright and some are just benign businesses that will not hurt you except in the wallet.  By and large, ignore them, unless you want to put your name in their publications and purchase them.  Colleges are not impressed by membership or participation.
  10. The 2018-19 Common Application (commonapp.org) will officially go live on August 1.  If you are applying to four-year colleges, you will almost certainly use this form.  UMass accepts it.  If you are inclined to begin in July, the current form is supposed to convert to the new one on August 1 if you choose the correct application year when beginning the application.
  11. The Coalition Application (www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/), which is an alternative application for more than 140 mostly elite institutions, will be available to you in July.  UMass will not be accepting that application, so if you plan to apply to UMass you will need to use the Common Application.  It’s your call as to whether you want to do the Coalition App as well.  The Universities of Maryland, Florida and Washington (state) will use this application exclusively.  Likely all other members will accept the Common Application as well as the Coalition Application.    As members of the Common Application, colleges are required to treat all applications equally in the Admissions process.
  12. Research shows that at least 20 hours of preparation for standardized college admission tests can improve your scores significantly.  Most of you will have 20 hours available for this purpose in the summer.  In addition to the free test prep available through khanacademy.org/satfor the SAT and academy.act.org for the ACT, and through the Method Test Prep link on your Naviance home page, Method Test Prep offers a few additional paid options, some of which are affordable.  See their links on the next page.
  13. Mark your calendars:  The FAFSA and CSS Profile (financial aid forms) will open for completion on October 1.  On Tuesday, October 2, there will be an evening financial aid informational presentation here at ARHS.   Thursday, October 25 will be FAFSA Night at ARHS.  Bring your completed 2017 tax return and some other information and leave with a completed FAFSA.  You will receive more information about all of this in the fall. For now, put these dates on your calendar and plan to attend.

Have a relaxing and productive summer.

Ceremony Celebrates Mural That Honors Amherst’s Cambodian Community

cambodiancommcelebrationTo celebrate the unveiling of a new mural that honors Amherst’s Cambodian community, over 100 people gathered at the high school for a Friday night ceremony, blessing and traditional dancing.

Recently graduated senior Augusta Fricke spent nine months working on the mural for one class period per day as part of an independent study. She designed the mural with input from a community of Cambodians, as well as scholars and teachers with ties to the community.

“I grew up with a lot of Cambodian students in our classes,” Fricke said. “When I was doing all the research for what to put in, I read a lot about what it’s like to be Cambodian-American from a younger generation.”

News From the 37th Annual Post-Graduation Senior Party

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the Post Graduation Senior Party such a tremendous success.  With all your help and support 160 Seniors and their guests donned their class of 2018 t-shirts and  had a great night at our new location, Hampshire Athletic Club.  The party-goers participated in everything from jumping around in the bounce house, challenging each other to duels in the  inflatable obstacle course, playing ping pong and corn hole, having their pictures taken in the Photo Booth, swimming in the pool, soaking in the Hot Tub, having fierce competitions on the basketball court,  lounging on the exercise equipment, having their Tarot Cards read, eating pizza, cake, and snacks, having amazing Henna Art Tattoos applied to their limbs and faces, singing, dancing, winning great raffle prizes–including a dorm fridge, as well as just hanging around and talking on this one last night as the ARHS Class of 2018.  Most importantly everyone stayed safe and off the roads–our main goal for this historically dangerous night for our High Schoolers.
However, this year was a very challenging year on the organizational and volunteer front and the party was in danger of being cancelled up to the last minute because of a lack of parent/guardian volunteers.  This event rests solely on the backs of volunteers who give their help beforehand fundraising, organizing, and planning,and at the event running the various activities from providing security, holding down the first-aid tent, registering people, handing out food, setting up, cleaning up, shuttling everyone home in the middle of the night etc etc.   It tales a small village to do this and I can assure that everyone who was there enjoyed this one last time getting to see their kids be kids in such a fun and safe setting.  This is my fourth year, two as event chair, and I feel honored to be a part of it.  I must admit my dismay that out of a parent/guardian pool of over 1,000 individuals that I was struggling to find the 75 people needed and ended up with 60 stalwart individuals, many doing double shifts.  We mustn’t let this tradition go, but it won’t work if people don’t help.  I hope that next year you will consider being part of this wonderful event.  Additionally, although I will assist whoever takes it on next time around, I will not be chairing it as my daughter will be a senior and it is time for me to pass the reins to someone else.  The tradition in the past was for Junior parents to run it and pay it forward for the senior parents, but anyone and everyone can participate!  Please consider chairing and supporting the event.  Anyone interested please contact me at tqfarnham@gmail.com for more information.
Shout outs to the following individuals who helped–it wouldn’t have happened without you–especially Alicia Walter who went from Shuttle Organizer to Unofficial Co-Chair and kept me on track throughout the process!

Attention Seniors- Graduation Info

classof2018Graduation rehearsal will be held at 8 a.m. on June 8th at the Mullins Center. All graduating seniors must attend this rehearsal, which will last approximately two hours. Please enter the Mullins Center via the ground level doors on the west side of the building (facing the town of Hadley) for rehearsal. Lot 67 is available for rehearsal parking.

ARHS graduation will be live streamed on June 8!  You can access the full ceremony here.

IMPORTANT Parking-related Information:

Below is the link to all the UMass parking lots. The main lots by the Mullin Center[#25] are currently closed.

Instead, lots 12. 30 and the parking garage are open for our use during graduation.

https://www.umass.edu/transportation/sites/default/files/mapCampusParking.pdf

Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. for the ceremony. Handicapped parking is provided in the metered lot on the N/E corner of the building.

Balloons of any kind are prohibited in the building. This includes mylar and helium ones as they interfere with lighting and equipment.

New This Year – The Mullins Center has installed metal detectors for the safety of its users. Mullins staff will be available to assist you at all entrances. In order to preserve the dignity and ceremony of the occasion, we ask that parents and guests remain in the seating area during the ceremony, and not climb down onto the floor of the stadium. After the ceremony, the barriers will be removed so families can reunite.

Since the Mullins Center staff must break down the facility set-up that evening, we ask that you not loiter on the floor.

After Graduation Day: Due to a policy change senior folders (including academic, health, and guidance) must be held at ARHS for 3 years after graduation. Therefore, we are unable to release these records to graduates as we have in the past. Class of 2018 folders can be picked up by the graduate starting in July 2021 and will be destroyed in July 2023.

Computer Accounts: As graduation nears, some of you may wish to take your Google data with you. The following links will help guide you in transferring or archiving your data.

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3024190?source=gsearch&hl=en https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6386856

Please note that accounts will be turned off at some point this summer, so please don’t wait to archive or transfer your data.

Click here to complete online gift form
Print PDF for mailing here
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here’s what educators say about Stars in Our Schools:
“Receiving a star is one of the most meaningful gifts to get. I love receiving these because I feel truly appreciated as a teacher, and I know that the donation people make is going back to a great organization that really supports our schools.” – ARMS Co-Assistant Principal and ELL Teacher Alicia Lopez
“I was really moved when I received some Stars in Our Schools cards in my mailbox indicating that the parents of some of my students had donated to AEF in my honor. AEF does very important work to support teachers and programs at ARMS, so a monetary gift is like thanking a teacher twice!” – ARMS Science Teacher Jennifer Welborn
“I have had the good fortune to be honored by parents and members of the Amherst community through their ‘Stars in our Schools’ donations to AEF. When making their donations, parents and relatives have commented specifically that they see their children singing with joy and self-confidence and that they have an appreciation for music of different world cultures. It is deeply satisfying to know that what we do in the schools gets carried out into the community.” – Fort River Elementary School Music Teacher Anne Louise White (retired 6/2017)
Share your thoughts and help Amherst create an economic development strategy
toaAmherst has begun the process of creating an economic development strategy. The town has engaged the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission as consultants to report on key economic indicators, an analysis of the retail market, and strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis. Amherst residents are invited to share feedback and have their ideas incorporated in the final SWOT analysis by filling out three surveys. The surveys can be found: here.
