PGO Big Idea Grant Funds Global Citizenship Day

A new and expressive vibe took over the classrooms and halls of ARHS when the PGO Big Idea Grant, entitled Global Citizenship, manifested itself all day on Thursday, April 6. Four artists worked in over twenty classes in Dance, English, Music, and French.

Tony Vacca, a wild, local percussionist lead the group, setting a full array of percussion instruments on stage collected from around the world, as choral, jazz ensemble, and concert choir groups came to play with him.

Mamadou N’diaye, a rapper / musician from Senegal inhabited the French corridor, sharing his knowledge of cultural diversity in Senegal with Oumy Cisse’s French classes where he talked about local languages, religion, fashion, traditional musical instruments, and the origin of Rap music that has been traced to West Africa.

Tantra Zawada, an African American poet from New York City, performed poems by such well known poets as Walt Whitman and Maya Angelou, inspiring the students in 10th grade English classes to create their own “Remakes” of published poems and share them with one another.

Meanwhile, Abdou Sarr, a Senegalese dancer, taught a harvest dance to all of Tracy Vernon’s dance classes.

The day culminated in a G Block assembly, where approximately 400 students, had the opportunity to actually watch these four performers share their expertise, along with some of the students who had created performance pieces during the day.

We are so grateful for all the support and enthusiasm we received from administrators, teachers, and staff. Special thanks to the PGO for funding this project!

Oumy Cisse, Tracy Vernon, & Ellen Reich (Grant Writers)

Amherst Police Targeting Distracted Drivers

share_image_1491524955852.pngBeginning today, Amherst police will be on the lookout for people texting or sending emails while driving. They’ll be participating in a statewide campaign to reduce the number of crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by distracted drivers.

“The campaign is designed to raise awareness of the importance of attentive and engaged driving and will focus on the dangers distracted driving poses to everyone on the road, including bicyclists and pedestrians.” The campaign will run through April 28.

They’ll be participating in a statewide campaign to reduce the number of crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by distracted driving. The effort is led by the Highway Safety Division of the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and is intended to address “a historic rise in fatal crashes fueled by driver distraction,” according to a press release.

State law prohibits adult drivers from writing, sending or reading electronic messages, interacting with apps or browsing the internet while driving, even if stopped at a light. Teen drivers under 18 are prohibited entirely from using mobile phones and other electronic devices while driving.

“Our goal is keeping all road users in our community safe,” said Police Chief Scott P. Livingstone. “If you text, dial or read a message on your phone while driving, you are endangering the lives of those around you, and you will be stopped.”

Career Day Participants Sought

career dayAHRS parents/guardians are invited to participate in our 2nd annual Career Day advisory on Thursday, April 27th to share your career path story.  Last year’s event, which involved multiple parents/guardians and community members, was very popular with our students.  We encourage people who participated last year to come again – the 9th and 10th grade students scheduled for this year did not participate in last year’s program.

Participating in our Career Day advisory requires only a 1 hour commitment, from 10:10 a.m to 11:10 a.m.  During your visit, you will be stationed in a classroom with another speaker and will be asked to speak for 10-15 minutes to a group of students who have signed up in advance to hear your presentation.  They will then have time to ask questions.

To confirm your participation in our Career Day advisory, please reply to this email expressing your interest by Friday, April 7th. Please include your name, job title/profession, place of employment, and contact information.  Further details about the event will be sent to you in April.

At ARHS, we strive to prepare students to be both college and career ready. Our goal is to inspire our students and educate them about the career opportunities open to them and the importance of furthering their education after high school.  We hope that you will join us for this educational opportunity.

Amherst School Building Project Update

March 30, 2017

To:       The Amherst Public School District staff and administration and the Amherst community,

From:  Phoebe Hazzard, Amherst School Committee Vice-Chair and Dr. Michael Morris, Interim Superintendent

While the proposed new schools building project failed to achieve a two-thirds majority in Tuesday’s referendum vote, our district will continue to move forward and plan for ways to ensure that our schools remain the best teaching and learning environments possible for our students and staff. There is no question that there was a wide range of opinions and feelings about the project in our small community. But the rigorous and passionate debate leading up to the vote reinforced how deeply our community cares about our elementary schools. And, the activity around the referendum has sparked an upswell in civic involvement, with many district parents now engaging as elected participants in our local democratic system.

Though provocative, the conversation around the proposed building project has also made our community increasingly aware of persistent issues that educators, administrators, and school committees have been grappling with for years, particularly the challenging physical environment of the Fort River and Wildwood buildings, uneven socio-economic distribution of our families, lack of affordable preschool, and fiscal challenges. Our educators work every day to provide our children with outstanding educational experiences despite a challenging teaching environment. These problems remain unresolved, and as we move forward we must be committed to continuing to consider how to address them in the most fiscally responsible and timely manner possible.

The Amherst School Committee will hold its next public meeting on April 25th at 6:00 p.m., at which we will likely discuss next steps. Interim Superintendent Dr. Morris will move forward with requests for the town to fund the outstanding capital repairs needed at Fort River and Wildwood, beginning with $500,000 to replace the Wildwood boiler. The district will also request $115,000 to conduct a site and building assessment at the Fort River School to inform discussion about the future potential of that site.

As we begin this next chapter, we’d like to express a sincere thank you to the members of the School Building Committee for their hundreds of hours of work on the proposed school buildings project.

Jones Library Celebrates the Thoreau Bicentennial Statewide Read

The Jones Library Celebrates the Thoreau Bicentennial Statewide Read,

Marking Henry David Thoreau’s 200th Birthday
Amherst, MA –   This spring, the Jones Library is participating in the Thoreau Bicentennial Statewide Read, a yearlong event that has events taking place in every city and town in Massachusetts through 2017.  The Thoreau Bicentennial Statewide Read is part of a global celebration that highlights the continued relevance of Thoreau’s writings and philosophical contributions, even 200 years after his birth on July 12, 1817.
A variety of events for all ages will be taking place at the Jones Library throughout the spring, and the Amherst community is invited to participate.  While the book club reading “Walden” has already filled, we invite the Amherst community to join us in other programming being offered – or to use these events as inspiration to read one of Thoreau’s works on your own.  Please join us in celebrating this great American author, philosopher, and poet.  His message still rings clear in our hectic society, and perhaps some of his words might help alleviate the pressures of modern-day life.
On Thursday, April 6 at 7 pm, Dr. Thomas Dumm of Amherst College will present a program entitled “Thoreau on Resignation and Resistance”, exploring Thoreau’s understandings of resignation and resistance, and suggesting ways in which we may be able adapt his understanding to the current political crisis in the United States.
On Thursday, May 11 at 7 pm, Dr. David Glassberg of the University of Massachusetts will present an interactive lecture on Thoreau and his legacy.
The Special Collections department will feature an exhibit entitled Let Us Consider Walden. This exhibit explores the influences of Henry David Thoreau on Clifton Johnson and Robert Francis, two writers living in Western Massachusetts. The exhibit is on display in Special Collections at the Jones Library in Amherst from May 1st to June 30th. Special Collections is open Monday and Saturday from 2pm to 5pm and Tuesday-Friday from 10am to 5pm.
There are also events planned for young people.  On Thursday, April 20 at 1 pm, Tom Ricardi of Mass Birds of Prey will give an informational demonstration and provide a chance to meet live birds of prey. As an introduction to the program, there will also be a story about Thoreau, and a true story about a wounded hawk and how Mr. Ricardi helped to rescue and rehabilitate her. This program is free and open to children ages 4 and up.
On May 1st at 2:00 pm, Story and Play story time will feature stories of nature and Thoreau.
A program for teens ages 11 – 17 entitled “Plant Printing on Greeting Cards Celebrating Thoreau” will take place on Thursday, April 20 at 3:30 pm.  Thoreau spent a vast amount of time in nature, and to celebrate that time, participants are going to quickly study images of his sketches with the intent of being inspired, and then use the samples of plant material provided by the library to create greeting cards.  Pre-registration strongly encouraged at 413-259-3091.
All events are free and open to the public.
The Walden Woods Project (Lincoln, MA), Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area (Devens, MA), University of Massachusetts Lowell Honors College (Lowell, MA), and Massachusetts Center for the Book (Boston, MA) are co-sponsors of the Thoreau Bicentennial Statewide Read.  Their goal is to have every town or city in Massachusetts participate by coordinating at least one event in 2017 that brings community members together to read a work by Thoreau.
In the spirit of self-determination championed by Thoreau, the coordinators of each town’s Read event can choose when in 2017 they want to carry out their Read; how they want to implement their Read; and which Thoreau piece they will read. With that said, to facilitate some shared experience among participants across the state, organizers will provide a brief excerpt from Walden for all participants to read, providing a connecting thread between all Read events across the state.
For more information on the Read event in Amherst, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.
For more information about the Thoreau Bicentennial Statewide Read as a whole, please contact the Walden Woods Project ateducation@walden.org or visit www.walden.org/bicentennial/read.

Statement from School Committee Chairs Regarding Superintendent Search

On Tuesday, March 21, the Amherst-Pelham Regional School Committee and the Union 26 Committee, meeting jointly, unanimously decided to postpone the search for a permanent superintendent of schools until fall 2017.  The committees will name an interim superintendent to serve for the 2017-2018 academic year, with a permanent superintendent to start on July 1, 2018.  Dr. Michael Morris has served as interim superintendent during the current academic year.

The committees deliberated about how best to proceed with the search for a new district superintendent following the news last week that the search firm hired to conduct the process on behalf of the district had inappropriately requested criminal background information from applicants. The committees had a thorough and deliberate discussion in which members balanced multiple issues, including the desire for a new educational leader, confidence in the current search firm, resources expended to date, the timing of the search, and the strong need to have a permanent superintendent who has the full confidence of the community and the committees.

The committees strongly believe that postponing the search until fall 2017, which would follow the typical calendar for superintendent searches, gives our district the best opportunity to ensure a better pool of qualified and diverse candidates than if we restarted the search immediately.  The committees also intend to work closely with the district’s human resources staff and Ray & Associates, the search firm, to ensure that a new search would adhere to all Massachusetts employment and discrimination laws, as well as achieve a standard of excellence that we expect for a search of this importance.  We are committed to bringing regular updates to the committees and the public as we restart the search process during the next few months.

Our committees have expressed how deeply they value input from the community in matters related to the governance of our school district, and continue to be interested in the full participation of the community. We hope that the volunteers who stepped forward to help with the screening of candidates and the broader search will continue to be interested in participating when we pick up this process again in the fall.

We are grateful to interim superintendent Dr. Morris and the district leadership team for their support during this search process. The committees will continue to work with our interim superintendent and other district leaders to ensure that we have a stable, robust educational plan in place for the next school year. We also will continue to work closely with our talented and dedicated educators, principals and other staff to ensure the continued success of our students and schools.

———–

Fly-In Programs for Under-Represented Students

There are many highly selective colleges and universities that sponsor free overnight “fly-in” programs for seniors in the fall.  They are usually two days long and are designed to welcome students to campus who can then assess whether an institution would be a good fit.  At the same time, they can get to know you a little so they can put a name with a face should you decide to apply.

This program may be for you if you earn high grades, take primarily honors and AP classes, and fit into at least one of the following three categories:

  1. Neither of your parents has a four-year college degree.
  2. You come from a Low income household
  3. You are a person of color

These Fly-In programs are selective. There are essays to write and application deadlines, some of which are this spring.

College Greenlight is a website that can help you find fall Fly-In programs with their dates and application deadlines.  The dates on the website are for this current school year, and will likely be updated for next year soon.  For now, use the 2016-17 information as a guide that will let you know which colleges have programs, when they are, what they are named, and when to apply.

If any of the colleges on the list, most of which meet full demonstrated need, is of interest to you, check the college’s own website for up-to-date information about the program you might want to apply for.  If you don’t see what you are looking for, contact their Admissions Office for help.

If applications require teacher or counselor recommendations, be sure to request them a few weeks in advance.
