Supporting Children of Color in the Wake of Racialized Violence

Our kids are exposed to racialized violence often. They witness, hear stories, and absorb our anxieties and their peers’ anxieties about anti-black, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant violence and more.
Research shows us that “toxic stress” caused by racism and violence can take a heavy toll on children. The challenge is especially acute in the case of children of color, who are more likely than white kids to identify with the victims of racialized violence.
In response to many recent high profile incidents of racialized violence, parents, guardians, teachers and others want to know how best to help children make sense of these events.
Register for a free call for parents, teachers and other concerned adults to learn how you can best support kids of color in the wake of racialized violence.
Date: Monday, October 10th
Time: 9 pm ET / 6 pm PT
Duration: 1 hour
Can’t make it live? Register anyway and we’ll send you the recording and transcript.
On the call you’ll hear from child psychologist Dr. Allison Briscoe-Smith, educator Dr. Sandra “Chap” Chapman and Andrew Grant-Thomas and Melissa Giraud, the co-founders of Embrace Race.
You’ll learn how to help children feel safe without overpromising or making them fearful. We’ll also discuss how to teach kids to approach the world with love and possibility when they so often seem targeted for harm.
Register for the call — even if you can’t join the live event. We’ll send you the recording afterwards.

Principal Jackson’s Letter to the ARHS Community Regarding Fan Behavior

Dear ARHS Parents, Guardians and Students,

Earlier in the week, I wrote to the ARHS community about the Holyoke High School allegations that our fans, during the September 23rd girls varsity soccer game, were inappropriate and used a racial slur. I assured Holyoke officials that we would take their allegations seriously and fully investigate. The purpose of this letter is to communicate the results of the investigation and, importantly, clarify how we will move forward.

Our investigation included interviews with the two league referees who officiated the game, the police officer who was on duty at the game, all four members of our event staff and 10 ARHS students. This morning I spoke with Holyoke High School principal and informed him of the results of our investigation. The findings are two: while there was considerable evidence that ARHS fans were inappropriate, we found no evidence to corroborate the allegation that racial slurs were used. I apologized to the Holyoke High principal and assured him we would use this experience as an opportunity to develop clearer behavioral expectations for our fans. And it is to the issue of behavioral expectations that I want to turn.

To begin, I’d like to distinguish ‘fan’ from ‘fanatic’.

On the surface, they share many similarities: both are loud, animated, wear school colors and track the ebbs and flows of the game with great passion. What distinguishes them is that the fanatic loses sight of the fact that there are considerations far more important than the final score and whether or not the losing team has been sufficiently humiliated for ending up on the wrong side of it.

In a word, then, my interest is that we conduct ourselves like fans. I care little about what the rest of the athletic world considers normal. Right now, my only concern is that we reset our own standards.

A final qualifier: I have no interest in turning athletic contests into a library. Home field advantage should continue to mean something. Fans have plenty of room to yell and enjoy the game experience.

So, here’s the Fan Framework:

  • The core principle is this: ‘for, not against’. A fan cheers for his or her teams, not against the other team. Whether our teams do well or poorly, the focus is on supporting them. How the other team fares is besides the point.
  • More concretely, calling out the names or numbers of opponents, or the name of the school, and then proceeding to call them ‘lousy players’ is prohibited. This goes for all other synonyms of ‘lousy’.
  • The same holds true for officials. Fans can express frustration with what they perceive as a bad call – ‘you’re kidding?! –  but they stop short of aiming personal attacks at officials – ‘you’re lousy!’. The synonym rule also applies here.
  • Lastly, these two chants are prohibited; ‘warm up the bus’ and ‘if you’re winning, clap your hands…’ If there are other chants or cheers that I haven’t yet heard that have the same intent – to  humiliate a losing team –  they, too, are prohibited.

Homecoming is this weekend. There is a full slate of games scheduled. This framework is effective immediately.

I’m mindful that the framework may take some getting used to and that are still issues to clarify. I’m patient. But to disregard it altogether will result in removal by our event staff.

On Friday morning, I will speak to the student body over the PA and summarize this letter, which we will also post on our web site. I will also make myself available during lunch to answer students’ questions and take their feedback.

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Thank you

Mark Jackson

Principal

ARHS STUDENT NAMED SEMIFINALIST IN THE 2017 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

arhsnmsqtThe National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced 16,000 students nationwide as Semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scott Harvey-Arnold of Amherst Regional High School was among those named.

About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to Finalist standing. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win National Merit Scholarships, earning the Merit Scholar title.

“Slavery in the Valley: Five Unsung Heroes Who Resisted”, a lecture by Robert Romer on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 2:30 pm at the Jones Library

The Jones Library Presents:

Slavery in the Valley: Five Unsung Heroes Who Resisted

The OCTOBER 15 EVENT IS PART OF NATIONAL LECTURE SERIES ‘THE BIRTH OF A NATION: SLAVERY, RESISTANCE & ABOLITION,’ TIED TO AWARD-WINNING FILM

Amherst, MA, September 22, 2016 – The Jones Library announces Slavery in the Valley:  Five Unsung Heroes Who Resisted, a lecture by Robert Romer on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 2:30 pm.

Slavery was widespread in the Connecticut Valley in colonial times, where most of the “important people” – including most of the ministers – owned two or three black slaves.  By no means did all of the enslaved people in the valley, some born in Africa, some born into slavery in America, passively accept their status as the property of white owners.  Romer will tell what is known of the stories of five who, in various ways, actively resisted and explain why it is important to remember those who lived here in slavery, the “invisible men and women” of our colonial past.

Robert H. Romer, physicist and historian, is Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at Amherst College, where he taught from 1955 to 2001, serving as editor of the American Journal of Physics from 1988 to 2001.  He is the author of Slavery in the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts(Levellers Press, 2009) and The History of Hope Church in Amherst (2013), a manuscript held at the Special Collections Departments of Jones Library and Amherst College’s Frost Library. He was the 2012 recipient of the Amherst Historical Society’s Conch Shell Award, for distinguished contributions to the history of the town of Amherst.

Romer’s presentation is part of the national lecture series and community-building initiative ‘The Birth of a Nation: Slavery, Resistance & Abolition.” The series is presented in conjunction with the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services at the American Library Association (ALA), The United Nations’ Remember Slavery Programme, Fox Searchlight Pictures and BazanED.

Inspired by actor and director Nate Parker’s acclaimed film The Birth of a Nation, the series will run August 21 through October 30, 2016, commemorating the history-changing slave rebellion launched by the film’s subject, Nat Turner, on August 21, 1831, through his capture on October 30, 1831. The lecture series marks the 185th anniversary of Turner’s rebellion, as well as The United Nations’ International Day for the Remembrance of The Slave Trade and its Abolition, observed annually on August 23.

“We are honored that libraries will be the primary venues for these vitally important conversations across the country, and thankful that the Jones Library came on board to bring this series to its local community,” said Jody Gray, director of the Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services at the American Library Association. “Libraries are not just about housing books; they have always been about learning, exchanging ideas, and transforming lives — characteristics that this series perfectly reflects.”

About ‘The Birth of a Nation: Slavery Resistance & Abolition’ National Lecture Series

“The Birth of a Nation: Slavery, Resistance & Abolition” lecture series is taking place in libraries, museums, institutions of higher education, and community centers around the nation during the period of August 21st and October 30th 2016. Each free public event features a local educator or historian addressing the topic of slavery, resistance and abolition, and will provide an opportunity for individual communities to engage in a timely and coordinated national discussion.

About The Birth of a Nation movie

Set against the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities — against himself and his fellow slaves — Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom. The film won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Fox Searchlight Pictures will release The Birth of a Nation on October 7, 2016. The company acquired the film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it received rave reviews and won both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition.

Community Kickoff Day This Afternoon

Today is Community Kickoff Day at ARHS.  The afternoon will be dedicated to building community and having fun.  The students will be following an Early Release Day schedule and will move into advisories at noon.  Around 1 pm, the whole school will move outside for class photos, music, ice cream provided by the PGO, and various other activities for the remainder of the school day, including the signing of a new banner which will be displayed at the school.
In advisories, students will discuss the new school norms campaign developed by a group of students and staff last year.  The message is: Proud to be ARHS…Supportive, Accountable, Upstanding, Diverse, Inclusive.  Students will review the full text of the poster campaign (which is comprised of student-written examples of each norm in action), watch videos of people who exercise these norms in their lives, and commit to incorporating one of these norms into their daily lives.
You are encouraged to check out the materials used during this advisory by clicking the links below.

Proud to be ARHS

Proud to be Diverse:

1) My friends and I have different beliefs, yet we recognize our differences, discuss them, and move past them.

2) When I moved to this school, I was able to meet new friends from different races and cultures.

Proud to be Inclusive:

1) I saw someone sitting alone at lunch and I asked them to come over and sit with me and my friends.  I introduced them to everyone, included them in the conversation, and said they were welcome to sit with us whenever.

2) I was in charge of an extracurricular activity and I made an effort to include students with a wide variety of interests, abilities, and skills.

3) I came out to my friends and they accepted me without question.

Proud to be Accountable:

1) I hurt someone else because of the things I said.  I apologized to them and will make an effort to be aware of the effect my words can have on other people.

2) I made a joke that went too far.  I noticed that I made someone feel embarrassed so I apologized for offending them.

Proud to be Upstanding:

1) I overheard a conversation during which offensive/hurtful words were spoken.  I stepped in and told them that the words they were using were unacceptable and unkind.

2) I saw someone purposely spill another student’s lunch.  I witnessed another student kindly ask that student to pick up the food and remind them that someone else would have to clean it up if they didn’t.

3) A friend was threatening to hurt himself.  I told his parents even though it could have cost our friendship.

4) I did not agree with a teacher and I wrote to the teacher and expressed my opinion.

Proud to be Supportive:

1) I saw someone struggling to understand the work.  I saw another student explaining and helping them.  This reassured me that whenever I am confused, I can ask for help without feeling embarrassed.

2) I saw a friend who looked like they were having a hard day, so I talked to them and gave them a hug.

3) I see students who may be upset about many different issues, and I see teachers take time to listen and help out.  They treat “different kinds” of students with equal respect and kindness.

Principal Seeks Feedback About Homework

Mark Jackson’s podcast addresses the following issues: Community Kickoff Events on 9/23; student’s nightly homework loads under the semester schedule; and the opioid epidemic.

He notes that the community kickoff events will be held during advisory. The events are a continuation of work begun last year in connection with dialogue day.  After that event, students identified norms that they observed in the school.  They are: supportive, accountable, upstanding, diverse and inclusive.  This year posters with personal account concerning those norms are displayed throughout the school.

Mr. Jackson also focused on homework under the new semester schedule.  He said staff is determining whether the goal of 30 minutes of homework each night is feasible with five classes.  He said staff is exploring the issue of how to adjust the curriculum to make the new course load manageable.  He said this is a work in progress.  It is a priority.  Mr. Jackson is seeking feedback on homework.

He also asked the community to consider what can be done to address the opioid and heroin epidemic in Western Massachusetts.

Amherst Poetry Festival/ Emily Dickinson Marathon this Weekend

edmarathonA one-day reading of all 1,789 of Emily Dickinson’s poems, and a celebration of another of Amherst’s great poets, James Tate. The inaugural Emily Dickinson Poetry Slam. An open mic, dozens of poets, two days of workshops, Doughnuts and Death, and, just for good measure, a Poemkémon scavenger hunt.

The Emily Dickinson Poetry Marathon and the fourth annual Amherst Poetry Festival return September 15-17. Produced by the Emily Dickinson Museum, Amherst Business Improvement District, Jones Library, and The Common, the festival is a celebration of the poetic legacy of Emily Dickinson, the exceptional poetry community of western Massachusetts, and poets from around the world who will gather to share their work in the very place where Dickinson penned her immortal words. Click here to see the full festival schedule.

The theme of this year’s festival is “place,” and it’s one participants have interpreted in as many ways as a poet’s imagination can run.
