Edible Perennial Gardening and Landscaping

Amherst, MA – An opportunity to learn about edible perennials comes to the Jones Library in a presentation about using edible plants in gardens by local naturalist John Root. Please join us in the Woodbury Room of the Jones Library at 7 pm on Tuesday, April 5, 2016.

This presentation is a visual one that features the variety of trees, shrubs, vines, canes, and herbaceous perennials that can be grown in New England for bountiful harvests of fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Participants learn how to establish and care for these plants using organic methods of cultivation. Nutritional and medicinal benefits of the plants are discussed as well. Questions and comments are welcome throughout the presentation, and handouts with a list of edible perennial plant species, resources for further study, and recommended plant nurseries are distributed at the conclusion of the program.

This program is sponsored in part by a grant from the Amherst Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Janet Ryan at 413/259-3223.

ARHS PGO Grant Funds Science Dept.

Thanks to a PGO grant the Science Department at ARHS was able to purchase three electronic dissolved oxygen sensors.  These sensors have changed how the water quality unit is taught in AP Environmental Science.  In the past the class relied on chemical test kits that were difficult to use and very unreliable, labs were crude and the results were unpredictable.  This year students were able to set up water samples and observe what happened to the dissolved oxygen real-time under different conditions.  They could simulate the effects of adding organic waste to a lake or river and experiment with ways to prevent the dissolved oxygen from dropping to critical levels.  This took the science of dissolved oxygen, which past classes have mostly just discussed in theory, and made it observable and real to students. These dissolved oxygen sensors will also be used in future Biology classes benefiting all ARHS students.

Funding for ARHS PGO Grants comes solely from our Stop & Shop fundraiser, please consider registering your card at https://stopandshop.com/aplus/register-card/. The program ends March 17, 2016.

86 Days Til Graduation! Project Graduation News

1506268e21e21e935bc1d056713b1340d5228b2016 represents the 35th year of Project Graduation!   Every year, on the evening after graduation, parents of both seniors and juniors have organized a great party at the UMass Mullins Center to celebrate ARHS graduating seniors and give them a final chance to hang out and have fun. This is not a school-sponsored event! It happens every year with a lot of help from parents, business donors, and the entire community.

The event includes dancing, a “tent city,” great food and drinks, bounces houses and obstacle course, henna tattoos, games and more.

Graduates arrive between 10:30 PM and midnight on June 10 (graduation night) and stay as late as 6 am on June 6.  You can leave early with a parent or in one of the shuttle vehicles that will be driving kids home, but you may not drive yourself to or from the event. Graduates can have one invited guest. That guest can be a junior or senior. You can drop off a tent, sleeping bag, etc., from 12-2 pm on June 10.  Just don’t bring anything illegal or dangerous!

Graduating seniors and their families are asked to donate $50 or more, but no senior will be turned away if they or their parent(s) can’t make a donation of that amount. Guests will be required to pay $35 with registration.

This event is made possible with the efforts of many parents.  The next Project Graduation meeting will be Wednesday, March 23, at 7 pm in Room 13.  Mark Jackson and Marc Keenan will join us and give us the benefits of their long perspectives on the party.   If you are a senior parent, please donate, volunteer, and register your child. If you are a junior parent, please volunteer. And everyone, please help us raise money by buying gift certificates and thanking local business supporters for helping to create a fun and safe celebration!

New Book Club to Focus on Diversity

imagesRecently a group of personnel, parents, and students met as a book club for several weeks to read and discuss two books by a local author, Cammie McGovern.  They read Say What You Will and A Step Toward Falling.  Both books are stories about youngsters with disabilities and their experiences with their peers.
The book club participants have decided that they would like to continue with a book club meeting once a month.  The plan at this time is to read Cammie’s newest book, Just My Luck, and to meet on Thursday, April 7th, from 3:30 – 4:30 pm in the Middle School library to discuss the book.  The intention is for the book club participants to decide at that time about the next book they would like to read and to meet the first Thursday of each month for discussion. After each month’s title is announced, you may purchase the book on your own or check with your school or public librarian to find out if a copy is available for you to borrow.

Currently, the group is interested in selecting and discussing books that center on the topic of diversity.  Anyone who is interested is invited to attend. Email Wendy Bloomenthal, bloomenthalw@arps.org, if you are interested in participating.

From ARPS: 2/22 Lockdown Update

ARPS  On Monday, February 22, at 1:06 P.M. the main office of Amherst Regional High School received a bomb threat phone call.  The school immediately activated their safety protocol, and in consultation with the Amherst Police Department, the school went into lockdown.

ARHS was one of eight schools across Massachusetts that received such a threat, which was unsubstantiated and determined to not be credible.  The school was brought out of lockdown at approximately 2:15 p.m., and students were dismissed as usual at 2:20.   As always, student safety is a top priority for the Amherst-Pelham Regional School District.  The District works closely with the APD to respond to all safety issues and will participate in a follow up investigation of this incident.

Upcoming Voter Registration Deadlines

registerDid you know that voters must be 18 by election day (not necessarily by the day they register), and of course they must be U.S. citizens.
Other useful information:

If you have an ID issued by the Mass Registry of Motor Vehicles (e.g., a drivers license), you can now register on line.  Visit www.sec.state.ma.us and click the “Massachusetts Register to Vote Online” button to access the online application system.  (You can also update your address or change your party affiliation here if you are already registered.)  If you don’t have the appropriate ID, you can still get a form here to print, sign and deliver to the Town Clerk’s office (of the town where you reside, preferably, for your students from surrounding areas such as Pelham, Leverett or Shutesbury.)  Of course, those offices also have registration forms.

In this state, you may vote in the primary elections even if you have not registered in a party.  If you register in a party you can only get the ballot of that party.  If not, you can choose your ballot on election day.

Important dates:
February 10:  Last day to register to vote in the Presidential primary election on March 1.  If you will be 18, this will be an exciting election for your first time out!

March 9:  Last day to register to vote in the March 29 Town Election for Amherst residents.  (Surrounding towns do not have local elections this time of year.)  In addition to candidates for Town offices and Town meeting, there is also at least one ballot initiative in this election, to form a committee to review and possibly revise the Town Charter.

August 19:  Last day to register to vote in the primary election on September 8 (for offices other than President–federal, state, and perhaps district or local, depending on where you live.)

October 19:  Last day to register to vote in the general election on November 8 (for President, other federal, state and local offices and state ballot measures.)

For more information, please visit the Amherst Town Clerk’s site at https://www.amherstma.gov/81/Voter-Information.

From Myra Ross, College Advisor

There is a change in my classroom presentation plan for this week.   The B and E period presentations originally scheduled for tomorrow have been changed to this Thursday in room 219.  If you are taking Honors Biology or Hhonors Chemistry B or E periods, or if you are in 3rd trimester Honors Biology or Honors Chemistry classes and have a study or elective you think you can miss B or E periods, you should attend one of these.

Everything else remains the same.  I will be in Mr. Thompson’s D-period class tomorrow and C Chem Com B and C periods on Wednesday.  If you have college prep chemistry in the 3rd trimester, I will come to your class.

If you would like to attend an after-school presentation, come to Guidance this Thursday.

Juniors- Tidbits from Myra Ross

college boundIt’s time for me to start helping juniors think about plans for after graduation. About 90% of you will go on to either a two-year or a four-year college. The task of deciding where you will go, and what your goals are requires some thought. You will need to gather a lot of information and then make your decision by May 1 of your senior year.

The ARHS College Handbook for Juniors will be distributed on Friday, January 29. It includes a chronological list of important dates for juniors, including test dates and deadlines and evening college presentations at ARHS. It’s a good idea to transfer those dates to your personal calendar ASAP.

The junior year is about research and exploration of ideas and options. The senior year is about narrowing down and taking action. Don’t be a senior before you are one. Approach your college search with an open mind and excitement about possibilities. Investigate many different kinds of schools including some you have not heard of before. Do college searches in Naviance and through College Board Big Future; go to college websites; look through college guidebooks; read the college advertising brochures that are flooding your mailbox. Colleges work hard to create those materials and if the college looks appealing to you, it just might actually appeal to you. Avoid the temptation to look only at reach and name-brand schools. You are looking for colleges that are a good fit for you, and that you can afford to attend. . I know from experience that many students change their minds many times throughout this process and end up in a very different place from where they were when they started. It’s important to look around!

I cannot over-emphasize the importance of visiting colleges. You get much better information if you visit, and more importantly, many colleges use demonstrated interest as a criterion for admission. If the college is two hours away or closer, they will wonder why you didn’t come to visit. Start local, over February vacation. If you are a high-achieving girl, you really should check out Smith and Mount Holyoke. They are wonderful schools, with very good financial aid.

There will be a large college fair at the Big E in West Springfield on Sunday, April 3at 1:00 p.m. That’s a great place to get a lot of ideas and information.

If you have not opened your Naviance account (at connection.naviance.com/Amherst), do so ASAP. If you have not been there before, you need to register with a special code unique to you. It was e-mailed to your arps account last June and at the end of the first trimester. Likewise, a code for each of your parents/guardians was e-mailed to the e-mail address they put on their emergency contact sheet. See Mrs. Cappelli in the Guidance Office if you cannot find the e-mail. If you have registered for Naviance, but cannot remember how to log-in, she can help you with that too. It’s important to open your account and start to look around the site. You will be making a lot of use of Naviance in the next year.

Please complete your Junior Questionnaire for College Conference, which is accessible “under “About Me” on your Naviance home page. You must complete it before making your junior appointment with me. It’s a good idea to meet with me both in your junior and senior years so we can develop and tweak your plan. See Mrs. Cappelli beginning on Monday, February 1 for appointments beginning on Tuesday, February 9.

Plan your spring ACT/SAT testing schedule early. Check for athletic and music/theatre conflicts. Register for the tests you plan to take. Be sure not to miss the registration deadlines because late fees are steep!

Students on free/reduced lunch should get test fee waivers from Mrs. Cappelli. Full SAT waivers can be used until the end of the late registration period. The ACT will accept a fee waiver in the late registration period, but you will be expected to pay the late fee. ; The registration deadline for the March 5 SAT is Friday, February 5. There will also be SAT dates on May 7 and June 4. If you would like to take the ACT also or instead, you can do so on February 6 (standby registration deadline is January 29), April 9 or June 11. It is an equal, alternative test. Many students prefer it. There will be three dates for each test next fall, so you can re-take the test you like better. To register you will need to upload an appropriate photo. Look for that information in the handbook or fin it online at collegeboard.org in the SAT registration section or at actstudent.org.

It’s a good idea to prepare for standardized tests. By not preparing you are not showing colleges your best. It could be said that you are just throwing away more than $50 Or one of your two fee waivers! See the handbook section on preparing for Standardized tests for free and low-cost ideas. Spend some time with the free test-prep programs, for the SAT at khanacademy.org/sat or for either test using the “Method Test Prep” program in Naviance.

Writing Workshop With Jane Roy Brown

writing workshopJones Library is offering a six-week writing workshop, “The Heart of Story: Writing the Stories of Our Lives” with Jane Roy Brown, an award winning writer, editor and landscape historian.  Writing allows us to find order and meaning in the tumble of daily events that make up a life. It offers a way to honor those who nurtured us, to tell the truth about a painful past, to capture memories passed down from grandparents. Whatever they are, our stories are ours alone—nobody else can write them. In weekly two-hour meetings and take-home assignments, participants will sift for memories, choose one to write about, learn storytelling craft, and complete a brief story from their life.

This six week series will be held on Saturday mornings from 10 am until noon, beginning on February 6, 2016 and running through March 12.    Participants must able to attend all six sessions.  As space is limited, pre-registration is required.  Contact Janet Ryan at ryanj@joneslbrary.org or 413-259-3223 to register.  This series is made possible through the Friends of the Jones Libraries.
